Good morning after guys, I was thinking of fitting an in line filter, went off that idea and will just get a Brita filter jug for tea and coffee etc. But wonder what others do to sterilise the system in general.
I am thinking of an initial heavy duty blast of steriliser tablets, run this through the whole system drain, flush through and repeat and then just use the recommended dose from then on. It's a 12 year old van and has been sitting unused for months so I want to make sure its safe, does that sound about right or should I do more? Plus what stuff would you use?

It's been a while since we had a van and I can't remember what I did last time...

You need to be careful as things like Milton that I used to use is said to damage the boiler. I use food grade citric acid, bought in powder form from ebay or amazon. Do it once a year in the spring.

But we also have an inbuilt microbiological filter that we run our cooking/drinking water through. It is by 3M and the head unit fitted to the moho cost about £45. The filters, which I replace yearly, cost about £50 each.

I use white wine vinegar (30p Lt in France), cleans the system & decales the boiler, it's what Truma used to recommend until they brought out their own product.
We only use the Motorhome in Europe so the water is safe to drink. We do use a Filtapac Econoflo filter in line with the kitchen tap gets rid of clorine & nasty taste you sometimes get when minerals in the water react with the plastics.

We never drink the tank water, but do wash with it.

So each time I refill it I give it a dose of water purification.

Seems fine, have tasted it, slightly chlorinated.

I know the arguments re cleaning and using bottled water but we don't drink water from the onboard supply. It's used for cooking, washing and bathing. We carry bottled water in the fridge for us (the dogs have bottles of water also that we chill in hotter climates.
We use the van all year so there's a pretty fast turnover of fresh water.

As we bought a new van we do drink from the tank.
Once a year use Puritabs.
NEVER had a problem.

When we bought our van we flushed it through with Milton, but make sure you flush it tnrough thoroughly after or your tea tastes horrible! We now use bottled water for drinking but tank water for cooking, tea etc and haven't had any problems. The dogs drink the tank water with no nasty effects. Since our tank isn't very big we tend to fill up every few days so its usually fairly fresh.

I put treated water straight from the tap into a dark tank and then use it from there;)

We use this inline water filter, fitted below the kitchen sink

It’s anti bacterial which is great when you are unsure about the quality of water that you’re putting in your tank.
