Tried ringing the terminal with no reply so far.

We have to be at the terminal just after 0600hr for a 0715hr sailing one day next week and I have a nearby wild camp in mind for the night before. Then I got to wondering if it’s possible to turn up the previous evening and sleep in the queue or car park.

Anyone know the answer ?

there are dedicated motorhome parking bays at Tesco's in Oban , now it does say that parking overnight is allowed but no sleeping in the vehicle but I wouldn't worry about that as many do

I don't think so ken .. there is a car park just beside the ferry terminal i paid a tenner to stop in for the night that was 2 yrs back ..but if its busy that could be tight..
I'm not sure the dedicated parking bays at the supermarket mentioned above are available now... I was told they were closed but didnt check when last there..
I'd be looking at somewhere on gallanach road on the way out to oban camping and caravan site.. there's plenty space there and areas where you wouldn't be bothering anyone..

Andy.

@andy63 @Neil S Cheers both, if the terminal is out, I’ll stick with the place I have in mind about 20 minutes drive outside of Oban and which is well away from the main road.

On the way to oaban after the village of loch awe theres three lay bys two on right and one on left and theres a bigger one on left after ben cruachan
Tesco in oban does get busy this time of year its packed like sardines nightly
Hope this helps

They were a bit frantic that we turned up an hour too early last year and only let us stay in the parking area after much humming and hahhing, so I suspect overnight would cause them to have a fit!

You won't be allowed to overnight in the terminal car park - it's barely adequate for the vehicles actually waiting to board! I've only ever once managed to park in the Tesco bays so I'd be looking for somewhere outside of town.

Just a thought, there's a big car park signed as you enter the town from the north - anyone know if it's possible there?

All the car parks we saw last week in Oban had the same signage stating no overnight parking but I'm not sure who checks up or if they ever issue fines. Tesco seem to have a private parking company now, and a three hour limit. There is a car park opposite Tesco that is £10/24 hours - but still the same sign. There is a spot on Park4Night but it was being prepared for a music concert this weekend. Try there next week?

Eventually got through to the terminal and as everyone thought, the answer was ‘no’, but they did suggest the nearby Shore Street car park.

That's the one that cost me £10 To park for the night and could be an issue if its busy.

I'd still have a look at gallanach road.. I've used the campsite at the end of the road and remember thinking there would be a few suitable stops for an overnight before getting a ferry..

Ken, I have looked into this as we hope to be sailing from Oban in a fortnight’s time. I am presently thinking of a laybye at Knipoch about 6-7 miles from the ferry terminal. It has views over a loch, although I believe there can be some road noise at busy times. It sounds as if you will be leaving before the roads are busy so probably not a problem for you. I don’t know if this is any better than the place you have in mind but I hope that at least it gives you another option. Have a great trip.

We were in Oban yesterday and there is still 4 mh spaces at Tesco. Be lucky to get one though I reckon. We went in by train as we stay at By The Way at Tyndrum, did notice mo ho’s parked at Cruachan Dam car park about 5:30 pm. This is about 18 miles out so not sure of suitability but looks a nice spot.

There is a large sign saying no overnight sleeping directly behind the parking ticket machine. Your call - let me know how it goes. You can park on the road nearby the boat club, just south of the terminal.

There is a sea facing car park just a few miles back at Connel, across the road from the Oyster Inn which has the benefit of doing good pub food. Pretty sure you would have no trouble staying there overnight, and I think maybe 20 minutes from the ferry.

I wouldn't bother with galvanic road if your van is any where over 8 foot high there are to many low branches instead go to club site at Benderloch they will let you stop in late arrivals for a small charge ,that is what wee did when catching early ferry.

There is a large enough car park at McCaig's Tower. If you look on street view there is even a MH parked there.
