We have just done part of the NC500 (heading to Moray now in the hope of better weather but the rain has followed us!)

Everywhere we have parked up has been clean and tidy with only the odd bit of litter. All the public toilets have also been clean. Only problem is the lack of non-glass recycling bins, only one seen at the car park next to Dunnet Bay CMHC site.

We were a bit peeved to see a sign outside that site saying facilities were only for site users but next to it was a large banner advertising ice creams for sale. If Joe Public is welcome to enter the site to buy an ice cream, why can’t Club members enter to buy some water?

Go figure…….? :(

We've stayed on that site a couple of times and Joe Public are always trying to treat it as a public facility and as a result the gate is frequently closed.
We've seen motorhomes entering to drop grey, fill with fresh and empty toilet cassettes with the warden being given abuse when requesting they leave.
I've even seen a couple park their campervan overnight next to the "No Overnight Parking" sign in the public car and then try to get into the club facilities to have a shower early the next morning!
I could be wrong but I think the "ice cream" sign is for the unit that occupies \ used to occupy the business above the club reception. Think it was a nature type place.
I also understand the Club wardens only stopped cleaning the public toilets in the same block 3/4 years ago but that was second-hand info.
From memory, there isn't even glass recycling bins on the club site as the waste is segregated at a central facility.

We have stayed at places with out recycling bins. I asked why and they said that they would be charged more for the waste that way so cheaper to just have the one type of bin.

Club is a misnomer, they are commercial sites run by a business, the board of directors are paid officers.
The wardens are in an invidious position with little or no autonomy.
A letter to the chairman may be worthwhile, do not hold your breath though.

Similar to what we were told. Cheaper to run one wagon and segregate later.
Having said that I think they are introducing wagons that are split to collect pre-segregated waste.

Yes most commercial waste bins are collected with wagon that has forks come down and tip over the top , requiring only one operator to collect the waste.

The bins at the site being discussed and the car park outside are just "domestic" style dustbins though.

Fair comment! 👍

I think that the big bins are often private contractors because they are cheaper than the local council

Yes you are correct last time we were up there it was a wildlife museum with all sorts in there it was very good😊

Some of the remote sites have waste / septic tank or foul water disposal licences that are linked to the number of units (be that houses / vans etc that the system can cope with, so if the waste water system has the capacity to cope with X no of households, and one has X number, plus Y extra transient users, the waste water system will be overwhelmed or the site will breach it's licence, so they might restrict waste dumping to people on the site

Our council had those segregated lorries, each house had three boxes for sorting recycling, plastic and tins, paper and cardboard, glass. We also had caddies for food waste. That all stopped at the beginning of the pandemic and at the beginning of this year we were given 2 new wheelie bins, one for plastic and tins, one for paper and cardboard. Glass has to be taken to central recycling bins. New bin lorries purchased to allow for wheelie bin collection. No more collection of food waste. The original boxes are of black plastic, which is not recyclable. A local councillor says they make good plant pots! Oh, and the new wheelie bins are also black plastic!

Everyone wants stuff but nobody wants to pay for it. I can imagine the response if the council put up the council tax to pay for more recycling, everyone would be moaning. It’s human nature

Yeh, noticed that when on Garleston C&MC a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately, the glass recycling commercial bin was closer than the "domestic" style other bins on the site.:whistle2:
