Hi when I am over in Norway is it worth going up to North Cape as my route takes me up past Olderfjord.

Yes,yes, yes! It's a fabulous view and you can overnight in the carpark.

Mind, we never actually saw the view because of the freezing mist and drizzle. Bought a DVD instead. .........

Yes definately.We got there around 22:30 in may.The barriers were up and unmanned so we didn't get charged,it's not cheap.We left at 09:30 and still no staff at the barriers.

If you are in the area go for it but it isn't the northernmost extremity of mainland Norway as it is on an island and I gather is quite commercialised - a sort of Land's End. A few kilometres away is a point further north, also on the island which is a bit quieter. Worth going there too.

That’s one place I am aiming to get to in the van at some point.

I have been there once before, thankfully not in the van. It was January, a major gale was blowing, the snow was deep. It was daytime but an Arctic winter kind of daytime, so not much different from nightime. I took a bus up to the visitor centre. Maybe I should have been concerned when the first driver declined to take the vehicle out. He was replaced by a younger, perhaps more foolhardy, driver. The bus had snowchains fitted and at one section had to wait while a snowplough cleared a way though.

Once arrived at the cape, passing through the visitor centre, I opened the door to the viewing area to be met by an almighty blast of Arctic wind. It didn’t just feel like the end of Europe, it was more like the end of the world and there was little to see – it was more like staring into the void.

The tarmac of the outside area was thick with ice and it was here I perfected the sport of coat surfing. Bend the knees slightly to lower the centre of gravity in an effort to maintain balance, face the Arctic wind, unzip and hold your coat open and wait for the forces of nature to send you skudding across the icy tarmac back to the visitor centre. Close the coat, bend forwards and fight your way against the blasting wind back towards the edge of Europe and repeat the process until you get bored.
