Just beginning the trawl for an insurance company flexible to travels outside of EU. Near distance such as Serbia, Montenegro and Turkey and the further such as the Stans, Iran and then moving eastwards.

I've got time to resolve this but any pointers would be appreciated.

Your best bet is with a broker who uses a plenty of different underwriters. This increases the chance they they will be able to help if your requirements are slightly different. Try AIB, they have a relationship with a lot of underwriters.
I needed trailer cover and business use with my American Motorhome, companies like Comfort who only have one underwriter just couldn't help but AIB found me the cover I needed. (y)

As I recall it is specifically Iran, the stans and any other volatile country on your route. Insurance to the European borders is covered but even for Morroco you need a green card

Iran is without doubt the most fascinating and beautiful countries I have visited, although the traffic is much denser than you might expect, don not forget to apply for a visa well in advance, and book your interview. You may find obtaining a visa to tour a challenge if your on a UK passport. No VISA or ACCESS and exchange via Turkey is the norm. Cash is not a problem as most markets have money changers, you might be shocked at the cash carried by them. Very safe country.
