Is it normal for the built in fan in a thetford toilet to sound like a Stuka dive bomber in full flight?
I appreciate the benefit of a toilet fan, I also see benefit in this providing a bit of, ahem! background noise. But are they all this bad and if so has anyone managed to suppress theirs?

Wohoo a toilet thread :)

Mine has always been noisy, so much so that I'm sure half the campsite knows when I'm occupied 🚽

Probably needs a new one, we replaced ours couple years back with one of these less than a fiver:

If its the same system the white flashing fan symbol is actually a button and you can silence it by switching it off once you close the toilet cassette.
I press the flush button and immediately hit the fan button before it wakes the neighbours, then press the flush button.

Well, it started as a serious question. So asked again, Do you have a noisy fan?

If you look at the housing underneath the charcoal filter thingy you'll see the fan is tiny. If it is going to move any worthwhile quantity of air it's going to be at high speed, thus a high pitched and loud whine.

So they are noisy? Now, who has modified them for something less noisy?

No, ours is virtually silent but an easy change to a new model.

I can hear my SOG fan but it is not noisy. No idea why a Thetford fan should be noisy, is it a bog standard fitting?
Don’t you mean ‘a standard bog fitting’…..?

(I’ll get me coat :imoutahere:)

Our Thetford fan started to keep quite a loud noise over the time so I went to buy 'just a standard computer fan or only x eur'. Fit perfectly and no sound at all, but the airflow of the computer fan was next to nothing compared to the original so I just ended up putting the original back. Worked well for the 2 years we had the van after that.

So next time I'm with the same problem, it will be the original no matter the price (my notes saying 'almost 50eur').

Just found this on Google by Lenny HB in his modding thread:

"Thetford fan fitted that didn't do anything apart from making a lot of noise & some Thetford bits. The first thing we had to do was disconnect the Thetford van as it was so noisy" Had a laugh at the slightly inaccurately placed hole in the floor.

Still leaves me confused that some people claim their fan is silent. Ours is so noisy that we over-ride it as soon as it comes on thereby not getting any advantage from it. Others say use a cheap computer fan though this is also claimed to not move much air. (how can you tell how much air is being moved?)

I had a SOG so the Thetford fan was redundant, I did bring it into use later when I modded the SOG.

Edit:
Just relised you were reading the post I linked to. But I have lost count of number of beers and wines today, its dangerous touring Spain.

Well, with the cassette out and the filter removed the fan is visible and seems to be fixed with a foam rubber support. Can't see how to remove it without taking out the whole toilet set. Don't really want to do that.

Interestingly, the noise damps down to next to nothing when I hold a finger lightly on the foam outer so that little fan is silent but is causing a heck of a lot of vibration on the wooden baseboard.

Tried a packer on top of the foam to do what my finger achieved but the filter above it is just laid in loose so does not supply any pressure, even with the cassette on top.

Don't have a fan - simple flush and open door then with magazine waft in lovelykins's direction....... and duck.

Not double sided tape as such. Self adhesive foam "diaphragm". The self adhesive is detached from the toilet casing on one side and from the fan on the other. Let's see how Locktite fixes it (without gluing the fanblades). Isn't modern design and technology wonderful! And to think I could have been having a beer in Spain like Lenny but I'm stuck in Blighty trying to silence a wayward fan.
