Is it possible (and recommended?) to stay overnight at the Newhaven terminal for an early morning crossing please? Or can anyone recommend a nearby site?

I always do the night prior to sailing at Selsey Bill (wild camping ),drive to Newhaven for the early evening, spend a couple of hours (I think 3 are permitted in the Sainsbury's car park)then on to the ferry terminal. I and many other vehicles certainly get there a minimum of 3 hours in advance.

I live only half an hour away so haven't stopped overnight but IMHO it's perfectly safe and room there to park overnight. In fact I seem to remember that on the DFDS/Newhaven website it mentions that overnighting at the port is allowed.
Take everything you need with you food/drinkwise as although the town centre is only the other side of the river/harbour and a 10 min walk away it's grubby, soulless and pretty grim.

I assume you are aware that.........

20% off Newhaven-Dieppe crossings for students under 27, young people under 25, people over 60 & those with a disability card.
You will need to present proof of age, your student card or your disability card and the discount is for the crossing only. Booking to be made by phone or at the ferry terminal.

There is /or was a CL at South Heighton Farm, just a couple of miles outside Newhaven : Mrs. D A Yorke 01273516359.
I haven't used it since December 2016 but it was quiet, pleasant and dog friendly.

We always stay at the port staff helpful and tell you to park in the car park right in front of reception

Have used Newhaven for last 3 trips over the water. Arrive late evening, park up in port car park get a good night's sleep and catch morning ferry. No chance of oversleeping as trucks all start up to catch ferry.

Yes. Can confirm all the above about the terminal parking. Have often stopped in the 'pickup' parking on the right (facing the terminal building) or in the section between the checkin lanes and the lorry parking opposite. NOT actually in with the lorries. This is where ferry staff will recommend. You'll get a good nights sleep after the evening sailing and a free wake up from the trucks. We have also stayed there when returning to the UK on the early evening sailing from Dieppe, as we have a drive back to the Midlands.

Go the Hope Inn about 2mls away, stopped there overnight a few times now. Good location just check in with the landlord.

This is a pic (taken from the ferry) of the Hope Inn, 10 mins drive from the ferry quay. It's on the harbour West Quay. In order to get from there to the ferry you have to cross the swing bridge which when open can close the road for half an hour. There's a notice at the bridge with opening times which vary according to the tides.
