Following problems with my heater not firing up, yesterday I took it to a Webasto agent in Gloucester. He discovered that the wiring harness was corroded, with a few breaks. Four hours later, and with my wallet a lot lighter, it had a completely new wiring harness, and was working fine. The harness has three inline fuses, in a group, which originally Autotrail had sited in the battery box. I had previously re-routed the wiring so the fuses were adjacent to other fuses, and also the -ve went to the -ve busbar, and through my SmartShunt

When I was inspecting the new wiring I commented that he had re-connected the harness directly to the battery (+ve and -ve), with the fuses back in the battery box. I said I would like the -ve wiring to go through the SmartShunt, and he said they would not warranty the work unless it was connected directly to the battery. Considering that the heater is my biggest power consumer, it seems that as it stands, it makes my SmartShunt worthless.

Can anyone see any reason why I should not re-instate the SmartShunt? - It would increase the length of the -ve cable by 100mm to the busbar. (16mm^2 cable from my busbar, through the SmartShunt to the battery)

Did they tell you why they wanted to connect directly to the battery? I cannot see why connecting to your smartshunt would make any difference UNLESS they considered the cable from the battery to the smartshunt to be too small for your possible total load and therefore affecting the Webasto supply?

He just said they always now connect direct to the battery, as they have had problems where people have wired the heater via additional fuses and isolators. The cable in the loom is probably only 2mm^2, so what I'm proposing is a vast improvement.
I don't have any high current appliances, so I feel 16mm^2 is more than adequate.

Seems like they have made a rule based on previous experience and are not allowed to make any exceptions. Whether you rewire it to your smartshunt and risk losing your warranty is a personal decision, I know what I would do. If you did, I suppose there is always the option of putting the wiring back exactly as they have done should you have any problems in the future?

My thoughts exactly! ;) Thanks for your comments.
