50 years of boating, just one on motorhomes.
In Sicily at the moment on our first proper trip in the motorhome. I made it here using google maps and, after many excursions down closed unmade roads, through impossibly tight villages and generally googles wish to go 'cross country' at the slightest provocation I am never doing that again!

I have purchased a Garmin 890 Camper in the hope that will sort it out however I have a few silly issues.

1. The system is telling me it wants to do an update so it is connected to the internet. I know its connected because, to test it, I tried the browser app which works correctly however the update says No Data Connection. Wi-Fi shows as connected and as I said, you can browse the Internet. I have tried with a couple of Wi-Fi connections
2. I am connected Bluetooth using Garmin Drive on an apple iPhone but I do not want the Garmin to handle phone calls. How do I persuade it to work for navigation but not calls?
3. I am using park4night for sites, is there a way to transfer a site to the Garmin?

I am sure there must be someone here who knows this stuff :)
Many thanks

David

2) I think if you select the camper 890 bluetooth connection on your iphone you have the ability to deselect the phone calls option. Not 100 % certain as i dont have mine with me.

3, AFAIK only by inputting the coordinates. I don't think P4N has poi downloads.

Can you not update via the Garmin Express app? 🤔
Express on my windows 10 computer does not detect the Garmin 890. I think it should but it may be a function of a Dell XPS with only USB-C Ports and an adapter to get to a standard port. I will try and pick up a USB-C to USB-A cable and see if that works

Thanks, I managed to do the software update last night and this morning connected to the camp sites Internet, sitting outside so the connection is better. Doing the maps now which I think will take six hours. Clearly does not like slow Internet and particularly not 4g but having discovered the map update is 12gb I really don’t want it on 4g!

If you go into settings on the 890,then wireless networks, bluetooth. Then click on the cog on the paired devices. You can now uncheck the hands free option.

DavidCh. Sorry I can't help with the setting up of your Garmin Camper 890, but I do hope you have more luck with that than you did with Google maps. (y)

Thank you for highlighting that Google maps are unsuitable for anything larger than cars or light vans, yet many insist that they are the dog's dooh dahs. A large vehicle specific Sat Nav with the correct files installed, which responds to dimensions and weights being entered, is the only navigational device to be relying on, when driving large vehicles.

Saying that though, at the end of the day, it's the responsibility of the driver to keep to a suitable route. ;)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

as JockandRita says but even then no sat nav can be relied upon for avoiding narrow roads other than posted width restrictions eg 6'6"

Agreed Max, but if the option of "Motorways" or "More Highways" are chosen, it negates traversing the narrower roads, unless they are necessary to reach you final destination, ie, a campsite or an Aire, etc. Buses and Bin Lorries have to use narrow routes to gain access to residential areas, especially in rural locations.

Cheers,

Jock. :)
