New Garmin Camper 1090

I’ve got an avtex one plus running garmin , I hate it , it has lots of good features but I run a tomtom beside it as it’s much easier to follow
Have tomtom sorted out the issue of toll roads ? ( put in no tolls.. no [robs.. but make a mistake and take a toll road it will presume to;; roads are wanted and leave you on tolls from then on. Garmiin will get you back off asap )

I have both and at present prefer the Garmin. The built-in TomTom ignored no Toll roads in Portugal and cost me a £5 fine. Frequently they will point to roads in opposite directions which is odd. They have both sent me onto roads that were unsuitable for any vehicles, especially Motorhomes. Over all they both get me where I am going but my wife never trusts them. I tend to but from experience I know she is right.

We had a 3.3m High tag so avoid toll roads , the reason I use tomtom as well is I find it much clearer at junctions & roundabouts
Having used Tomtom and Garmin, I agree with that. My current Garmin says "in 200 metres enter roundabout". Yeah, but then what? I need to know which exit, in order to know which lane on entry.

I use the garmin camper and I think it’s ok it’s not perfect but it does get us to our destination

Lynne uses the latest tomtom camper I hate it because it keeps changing the settings but it’s all down to personal tastes

As data technology improves I probably won't buy another standalone Garmin satnav. I use Google maps on a 10" tablet fixed to the pop-up panel on the dashboard, also doubles up a my entertainment centre.

We are Garmin “Camper” users and are generally pleased with it. On entering our vehicle details it has never taken us down an unsuitable road but, in areas that we know well, we have seen it make a detour to avoid a road or feature that we know doesn’t cause a problem. That, potentially, could be adding unknown miles to some journeys.

However, I would rather travel a few extra miles occasionally than meet a low bridge etc, especially when towing a trailer.

I'm a newbie - have been using Google Maps for SatNav for years in the car and now do it in the van with a Pioneer radio that is controlled by an App on my phone, also giving access to Maps, Spotify and other Apps by way of big buttons on the dashboard unit. (It also means I can turn it off without getting out of bed).
I've been taken to a couple of width-restricted roads by Google, but only when we've deliberately set a meandering route avoiding Motorways so we can see more of the UK from our now higher-up seats, so it's sorted of added to the mystery. Are there any serious downsides to using Google rather than spending what seems to be a lot of money on Motor Home satnavs?

We use Google maps as well, on the phone. It’s a shame that it doesn’t allow you to enter the vehicle dimensions (yet...but there’s always hope) but I tried a number of the apps that claim to compensate for vehicle width and they failed to do so. Google has always seen us right though, even if there have been a few teeny weeny roads included...you know, the ones with grass growing in the middle. We have a lot of those in Devon.

My wife is the navigator. She swears by maps.me and sits there with her phone or the ipad getting directions while our massively expensive GPS/reversing camera/radio/CD player is used as a radio only. Try it, it's a free download and works all over Europe.

We use a Snooper Venturer set up for a MH where you can add MH dimensions and weight so that it will not take you on 3.5 tonnes restricted roads. Have generally been pleased with it but wife also has map road atlas open so can countermand directions if necessary!!

TomTom Truck 6250 it's only 6 inches but I've been told that's big enough! (y)

Since TomTom stopped giving me map updates and pestered me to purchase a newer model, I decided to upgrade to an Avtex one, which has lifetime map updates, and so pleased I did. Absolutely no issues at all in use, larger screen and easy to follow. Nothing wrong with TomTom however apart from not being able to update, which is a problem.

I agree but maps.me don't update as often as Google. Just over 12 months ago a new road opened near me, it's on Google but not maps.me.
The dimensions facility is nice to have but not decisive if you know your van. Imo the first and last mile are the most important, in between just need to read the roadside signs.

Live traffic information for this new Garmin seems to be only available via a smartphone running the Garmin Drive App.

see https://discover.garmin.com/en-GB/traffic/

The current "lifetime" Europe-wide RDS-TMC traffic avoidance feature I currently have on the Camper 760 LMT-D will cease to exist as of 30th June 2021 due to the current service provider discontinuing the service

will you be able to pair the Camper 760 with the camper drive app? I find the updates on delays useful. Traffic news is a feature I particularly like.

'Live' traffic, never found it to be accurate, especially on Google maps, currently showing fairly heavy traffic where I live, but in actual fact there is none, there hasn't been any all morning.

Our TomTom camper/caravan has a built in sim for lifetime live services - traffic, charging poinys, and so on. WE also get lifetime map updayes (4 times a year). I think that is better because it does not rely on data from your phone for traffic info.

Lot of those in Cornwall too, even the 'main' roads are only passable with extreme caution. Used google maps down there when visiting from Scotland and have often wondered if purpose built - enter width of van etc - satnavs would have saved my blood pressure driving down barely van width winding roads with 20 foot high hedge rows that you can't see round 'til you meet summat nose to nose coming the other way and nowhere to pass! Happy days :)

I have had four garmins - latest was 760T which I got on with very well.

A year ago changed to Garmin 785T and had problems with it syncing with the mac... No Garmin Express, wouldn't show it plugged in, couldn't add POI's - it took me 10 months of emails/calls to Garmin support until they agreed and changed their website to show it only works on Windows for updating and POI's.....

So got a refund. thankfully

Ordered a TomTom Camper which I have had a few hassels getting POI's onto it, but of course not yet used it outside, still wondering whether to return it.

Saw the new 10" but think that it probably is same as the 785....

Maureen is convinced the big GPS makers have a connection to the oil business because of the occasional circuitous routes they take us on !
Maureen could be right. Alternatively we have had many happy times discussing whether they are all a con and in reality the instructions are from a real person in a call centre with an atlas ..... ;)

I use Waze on my smart phone. Free and never had a problem with our 7.5m Rapido mh.
I wouldn't pay the mega price of some of these satnavs for motorhomes as I like to check the route on the map before setting out.

I just yesterday read that most all such apps use roughly 5 meg of data per 100 miles of journey..
No matter what plan you are on data costs money, so the cost of a couple of years use for me would would pay for a dedicated GPS :-)
