The Russians developed these in the 1960's

Went from what was Yugoslavia to Venice on something like this in the 70s, believe it was called a Hydrofoil. It was made by the Russian company Aeroflot (? spelling) and identical inside to a Russian plane we had flown in the year before. Very smooth trip and a really quick.

In the early 1950's there was a local ferry route between Montevideo and Buenos Aires which had a fleet of WWII vintage seaplanes that 'flew' back and forth using the WIG effect

My dad was the officer on watch on a ship sailing up the estuary of the River Plate in fog, they saw the plane coming straight for them, the pilot managed to turn a bit but hit the bow of the ship with the wing causing the plane to spin and crash.
The ships crew managed to rescue most of the passengers but the plane crew were killed along with several passengers.

Two firms went bust trying to run a hydrofoil service from Brighton marina to Fecamp due to its inability to cope with the conditions even when la mer was just un peu agitée (which it too frequently was).

20 years ago I took my current m/h across the channel on a hovercraft just the once. Not an experience I had any wish to repeat but the sticker must be a collectors item now.

We went on that once!......not a pleasant experience!!

Wow, if only. Would be amazing. Now I am an eternal optimist but even my half full crystal ball is telling me that this is never going to work. Those little orange dinghies littering the channel and hitting the props are going to be like bird strike on a Pratt and Whitney. It will be in limp mode more often than a 15 yo Renault Master with a dodgy EGR driven by a one legged pensioner on a gammy knee.

They had a foil ferry from London to zeebrugge. A friend of mine was Captain…… spent 50% of its time out of service due to hitting large semi submerged debris
I remember it well, my first 'business trip' abroad.
In order to beat a postal strike, aged 16, I was sent on a return trip to post important documents in Zeebrugge.

I got about 1 hour in Zeebrugge whilst they refueled before I had to catch the hydrofoil back to London
