Mozzies!

As you will see from of my recent threads we are in very hot France. The area we are in now they not caused us any problems. But when we in the South of France my poor wife was almost eaten alive. Been so hot we had all the windows open but with just the most mesh curtains down.

Which is the best beat these little b*** who seem to get in sometime and wait until it’s lights out, they start to attack, We have tried electric blue light things , citronella and sticky pads.

Hate the things. They keep you up at night.

I know you get a plug in device to keep them away but I never used it long enough to really know if it was effective.

Spray the van with insect spray before bed time , then go for a 10minute walk to let it clear
then go to sleep

I learned that one in Egypt from a local , when we went out during the day , spray the room
by the time we went to bed they were all dead , that was after buying all kind of magic cures that didn’t work , simple but effective

Make sure that your mesh is sufficient to stop the little blighters..

I assume you where in the Camarque area ( Arles) where its I.possible to get away from them.
So we left after 2 nights never to return
And we thought the midgies of Scotland were bad!

I never used to be too fussed by mozzies, although would always take the usual preventive precautions.
Last October, we were in northern Spain near Palamos and I was bitten by something. To be fair, probably a fly not a mozzie. I batted it and there was a splash of blood on the back of my calf.
Didn't give it any more thought.
Two days later my lower leg was swollen and red, very reminiscent of a Jamon de Serrano! Local A&E confirmed a blood infection and prescribed 14 days very high dose antibiotics. Everything cleared up, all good, so I thought.
Now, 12 years previously, I had open heart surgery for a mitral valve replacement and various other bits and bobs. Everything was fine at the last checkup prior to the infection. However, within weeks of that infection I was suffering breathlessness on mild exertion and ended in hospital for two weeks in March with fluid on the lungs.
Drains up scans revealed pretty catastrophic damage to the mitral valve replacement, consistent with blood poisoning from the insect bite. I had had endocarditis, which is unusual but not unknown.
Upshot? Back in to hospital for open heart valve replacement(again) in three weeks time.
Key learning....insect repellent, long trousers.

Most people would know there are lots of them about in warmer climates! That’s why we stay in England in the summer, rain wind and some sunshine 👍🤣

Went to St. Tropez when I was 15, never got a single bite.

They seem so much more common these days, they love feasting on me.

When we are at our Villa in Spain, I pay for the garden to be sprayed by these people https://www.fogoffspain.com

I spray every room twice a day too. Seems to keep them at bay. Same in the motorhome as others have said. 10 mins before. I even carry spray in the car.

Once got bitten so bad, went into the chemist in France with swollen hand, the pharmacist shrieked when she saw it and said I needed a cold compress and to see a doctor. But some mild anti biotic took it down.

Saintes-Marie-De-La-Mer in the Camargue. A lovely place we’ve visited a few times, but which we said we would never go back to, but went back to, and we went back again in June, and we’ll never go back, again. This time we mean it. The mozzies are terrible.

Deet and Picaridin are the only things that work. Picaridin is as effective as Deet, but is much kinder your skin and clothes.

Warmer climes? How come the wee beasties in Western Scotland eat you alive? BUSBY.

Its what I've got🤷‍♂️
as part of the regulatory process 100% DEET products are now being withdrawn throughout the European market and will no longer be available. DEET repellents over 50% in strength will not be legal for sale in the EU after 2016.29 Nov 2016

I think there is a growing infestation of the tiger Mozzie in France , working it’s way gradually north
apparently far worse than the local species

Used to do this every evening in moho and boat, worked a treat. But now we have the dog andcan’t use fly spray

I use Avon “Skin so Soft”and it works a treat for me.
I tried that a few years ago. Total rubbish. I had more bites than I would have had without it. Jungle formula is pretty good at keeping mozzies away from me, without it they have a lovely feast whilst leaving my driver alone 🙄

Had nothing but beautiful sunshine in UK without a bug in sight. Windows open doors open its just fabulous darling.

Thanks to everyone for the likes and hugs. At least my treatment at the hands of the Spanish and UK Medics has been exemplary. I read of Riverbankannie with horror.

Four weeks ago we were in Spain in and around Salou, loads of bites on both of us, far more than normal. Moved up to Adge, again loads more bites than normal. We were using odomos on both of us and a plug in anti-mossie over night.
