Motorhome Values post Lockdown

I think they will be an attractive holiday option for many that had not considered a motorhome before but I wouldn't expect an increase in the value of motorhomes.

Value of anything is only relevant if you’re selling or buying. If like a lot of people it’s a long term purchase it doesn’t matter, unless you have an insurance claim.

My feeling is that my new (to us) motorhome that we bought just before Christmas, and have so far spent 2 nights in, will have considerably dropped in value.

I doubt anyone will be doing much moterhoming this summer.
I doubt the larger family/resort sites will be permitted to open this year
I would expect smaller 'simple field' sites will be permitted to open, at some point, but probably with a blanket halving in the number of pitches
France have blocked tourists until 31st October and and Germany have blocked tourists until 31 December, so that rules out most of Europe for 2020
There will be a lot of motorhomes coming onto the market over the next year.

But once things ease up, I suspect it will become popular again

If people can’t or won’t fly or take cruises but we have an economic depression... will Motorhomes be in greater demand and values increase ?
They could increase from the abysmal value which they are at present but it will be nowhere near to the value they once held. The entire leisure market will take decade's to recovery if it ever does.

My guess is that quite a lot of MHs bought new on finance will be repossessed because optimistic buyers' financial circumstances have changed and they can't afford the payments.

Expect to see pre-owned keen pricing on dealer forecourts after lockdown.

Too true and maybe a few from dealers who go bust at knockdown prices. There must be quite a few with high fixed overheads even if the staff are on furlough. I also think hab checks will be hard to get booked in this year.

Can you provide the provenance for these 2 statements please. Not a confrontational request just an effort to confirm. Thanks.

If there are more buyers than sellers the price will increase, if there are more sellers than buyers the prices will drop.............simples.......

Mr Tinca

It could be a positive for the UsedMH market and a negative fo the newMH market, I think a lot of manufacturers will sadly go to Bankrupt or into Liquidation as without doubt the economy of all countries will take a serious hit resulting in the New MHmarket being unable to recover in the short to medium term as demand will have fallen off a cliff, however,as the economies recover there will be a surge in demand and used Motorhomes will fill the gap resulting in prices recovering to pre Covid levels and better for those MH’s that are as now sought after.

Some reading here Michael, I have read but don't understand what it means for us.

This all depends on what money people have , suggestions have been that 2 million will be out of work companies may have to cut wages on top of that property prices may fall so if we have a long recession / depression than it is inevitable MoHo purchases will be way down on people’s lists and tents / caravans will probably be more desirable for leisure breaks.

Thanks Martin, I suspect it's a blanket advice regarding border control not access refusal as OP suggested. I could be wrong but it will mean every one being stopped at the border rather than sailing through. Who knows.

Yes, I am sure you're right; it just means tighter control due, in the specific case of France, for example, COVID-19 and terrorist exploitation of it etc. So not outright closure, just tighter controls for the reasons given. Absolutely not a ban on tourists. I think that would have received massive, fulsome coverage in the news.

Ours might be old, 2000 Autotrail Chieftain, but owes us nothing, currently SORNed and insured as off road.
Virtually no cost to us annually.
It can sit there for the rest of the year if necessary, and will be ready for us when use is possible again.

There are good reasons to think m'hs will increase in value as we gradually come out of the crisis. There are also good reasons why they will decrease. Or even no changes.

The straight answer is, like everything else in this current "crisis", nobody has a clue. You might just as well read the tea leaves in the bottom of your cup. (I use teabags so can't even guess that either! )

But don't let me spoil the discussion! :drinks:

We have a holiday home in France so follow the news there carefully. Macron has stated that he will not open France’s borders to non-Schengen country tourists until the end of October. He has stated this several times and I have read it in our “local” on-line newspaper, “Le Journal, Sâone et Loire” edition.

Cannot comment on Germany as I have no personal knowledge.

Lots of doom and gloom in this thread.

My perception is different. There are lots of businesses that are doing extremely well in this time. Nikki works for a garden manufacturer they have increased orders 10 fold. A crayon company had gone bonkers. Then there's the supermarket industry, you can't get bread flower for love or money. Amazon are having to up their storage which only means those supplying to must be busy too.

we will get through it. There might be a little disruption, but then again there's an awful lot of people who have had 4-8 weeks paid off work who will be itching to get back to work and make money or get away from the family, fully refreshed ready to go and probably as well as being a bit fatter and bordering on alcoholics, far more productive than ever before.

The leisure industry will take a time to recover, it always does, but my motorhome won't be going anywhere, possible upgrade when all this crazyness is over.

remember guys, this talk is offering salesman ammunition..

When selling-
"mate thats a lot of miles"
"well it's a bit old now"
"Mate people don't want low miles motorhomes"
"there's a recession there's not a lot of call for motorhomes"

When Buying
"mate this vans milage means it aint ran in yet"
"these quality older vans go on for ever"
"look at these miles, barely used"
" it's the right time to buy, the industry is booming again now everyone wants one if you don't sign the papers today it will be gone tomorrow"

Maybe to qwell the clammer from the threatening population. Take Brittany Ferries for example do you see Macron telling them summer is down the toilet? He also was going to fix the ludicrous pension arrangements in France, that's gone very well! So we shall see.

I agree with Haganap on this, most people will escape this relatively unscathed, pensioners will likely notice no difference, a lot of businesses are thriving, anyone being furloughed and getting 80% is probably ok, as nibtravel costs and less to spend on, self employed could potentially do very well, getting 80% of last year's income and being able to trade as well. Unfortunately there will be massive unemployment but the demand from the remaining 90% should keep the demand relatively normal.

The only reference I can find to French border controls to the end of October is HERE and it is in respect of borders controls that were instigated before CV-19 was even heard of, personally I will just be "wait and see" and if nothing else I can avoid France I am sure.

To my knowledge this is just for non.schengen countries of which the UK isn't classed as one .......yet.
Additionally he isn't going to pass up the 12 million tourists for the TdeF in august I wouldn't have thought. They are apparently working on a coordinated restart of air travel & whizz air have already started flights into /out of spain/portugal

What is clear is that there will be some international travel difficulties for a reasonable while yet. Assuming the British are desperate for some holiday relief once the lockdown thaws a little here, I would think camping in all its forms will become very hot very quickly. It’s gonna be a lot safer than seaside hotels for instance. Could be still lots of folk looking for a bolt hole release eh?
