We were over 3.5t when we went in 2018. Avoided go box issue & went through Switzerland- go to office at border & buy a document that allows you to travel in Switzerland- we only camped one night as very expensive. We went to Slovenia initially only to see lake bled so only allowed 3 days but Slovenia was lovely & we ended up staying 2 weeks! Into Croatia- just follow the road down the coast don't use motorways unless you go to national park (we'll worth a visit!) Plenty of drop.in camp sites & Aires all down the coast next to the sea. We didn't have insurance for Bosnia & NO you can't buy it at the border - we tried!! We ended up catching the drive on/off ferry across to the island, drove to end of island which connects with the mainland and then on to dubrovnik. The islands were lovely & well worth a visit, ferry was about £35 at that time.
Thank you.

Agree with everything Jaygee says. We did the same amazing trip although we did use the tunnels not go over the alps.
we didn't realise we weren't insured for Bosnia until we got to Split. We'd been to Dubrovnik before so got the ferry to Ancona and went to Assisi and many more amazing places in Italy. Came back through Tuscany and Germany. Hadn't even thought of going to Italy when we were planning to got to Croatia.
Didn't book a campsite for any of the trip at all.
Love to do it all again.
BTW Salzburg is one of the best cities we've every visited. Stayed in a stellpatz(Reisemobil Stellplatz Salzburg www.reisemobilstellplatz-salzburg.a) just outside and got the bus in.
Also there's a lovely fishing village called Fazana just above Pula in Croatia) worth spending a few days if you have the time.
Hey guys thanks for all this info really helpful. We touched Italy last year when we went up the Med through France to Genoa. We did say then we would never take the MH through Italy again. The traffic was crazy its not whats in front of you its whats behind mainly scooters we were calling them mozzies in the end thousands of them. Obviously not your experience so maybe we were just unlucky. But even the camp site we stayed at they fit you in like sardines where as in France the complete opposite. Well you have to try these things. Cheers

I'm also off to Croatia end of May, going via Italy (Bari-Dubrovnik ferry) then up the coast, through Slovenia and turn left into Italy again (wife wants to do Venice). I've discovered the new Peljesac Bridge was fully opened last year which replaces the ferry between the peninsula and Komarna so you can bypass the bit of Bosnia & Herzegovina that reaches the coast without even stopping. It's toll-free too :)
Great thanks will check this out. Cheers

It's probably best planned step by step as you go from your places of interest along the way.
Everyone's route will be different.
Just set you sat nav for non toll / motorway. Google maps is very useful for assessing the suitability of roads if you're concerned

Hi we are heading over to Croatia in a few weeks. We plan to go through Belgium Germany Austria Slovenia and into Croatia. What do we need to know about each country regarding poss clean air stickers ? road tolls ? and any other paperwork we may need to apply for to get through each country. Any advice gratefully received.
My wife and I have been to Croatia twice in our motorhome and its fantastic. Not sure what the current legislation is but there are stops prior to the borders where you can buy your vignette etc. There are great camping sites in Slovenia near to lake Bled. In Croatia we stayed on the island of Krk – to date the most luxurious site we have stayed at – proper posh 😊 The next visit was just outside (south) of Dubrovnik – Once again fantastic on the way back we stayed near split. The roads were great especially the motorways – looks like the worst roads in Europe are the in the UK. There were no problems language and everything we needed was available. The only issue we had was in Austria where found it a trickier to find campsites but had left it all to the last minute.

Hi Mike what route did you take through Europe to get to Croatia ? Did you do all motorways ie tolls or did you avoid them ? Totally agree about UK roads being awful we were in France last year what a pleasure to drive on their roads. Cheers

This is now a bridge.

We ve been to Croatia several times, our route of choice is belgium Luxembourg Metz, corner of Germany, Switzerland, Italy via Trieste then E61 through the corner of Slovenia into Croatia. The reason for this is that (:h:500kgs) it avoids most of the tolls and still a nice route with some lovely easy stops en route. For Switzerland for we buy the 10 day 3500kgs+ pass for about €30 which we have 1 year to use the days on so gets us there and back and as long as we exit through Gotthard tunnel the only other tolls are the italian ones to get to Trieste which are reasonable imho.

If we wanted a more Scenic route then Munich and the Grossglockner is an excellent option as its wonderful Scenery and a good road and last time we went you could still get through Zell etc on non-toll ( might need to verify that)

There are plenty of other options though but beware of setting the satnav on avoid tolls because there are roads there you probably don't want to do in a motorhome.

The first time we travelled via the south of France - fantastic till we got to Italy where some of the roads were not so well repaired however there were a lot of detours as this was at the same time as the bridge in Genoa collapsed. The second time we started going through Germany but I got fed up with the traffic and the road works so I nipped down and used the French toll roads – yes added about 150 quid to the cost but I love the French toll roads – super smooth

Just following on from someone earlier about our trip to Croatia.
We generally know where we want to end up before turning round (although this often changes). We usually miss motorways completely and use the satnav put on to non toll roads and then use the old fashioned method of a map. We plan day to day or a couple of days ahead at the most just going in the genrral direction so we can find places we'd never have though of on the way.
Someone also mentioned about Italy being a bit of a nightmare. We've again found that by following non toll roads it's not so bad apart from going round or through towns.
We went over that bridge on the outskirts of Genoa that fell down a month or so later.!

The 99 route is closed after the roundabout with the 96 at St. Michael.
No official closure. Google and other sat nav are wrong including Michelin. We've just been there and next day took an online day vignette to go 96 to A10. Reason being officially they alternate closure sides. Currently a complete re-tarmac across the road.
Good news is the campsite at the sports stadium and local facilities. Also got green light and no toll 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍the next day.
99 due to reopen early June.
