Motorhome trackers

Has anyone tried these?

They use 2G technology which most phone companies are phasing out.
I had a cheap generic tracker until the GifGaf sim stopped working in it.

Now use a Rewire one, works very well and their backup is very good. Got the basic tracker on Amazon for £35 and subscription to Rewire is 60 quid a year.

I'll have a look at that thanks.
The one I was looking at is 4g and no subscription

I only looked at a couple both said 2G that one looks OK.
Rewire works out a bit dearer but they have been around a while and appear to be well thought of.

2G will be around for a while yet because lots of critical infrastructure uses it. 3G is being phased out first.

I had a Rewire in my last van. Nice and reliable. Although it was just a preconfigured generic tracker tied to their service. My brother got something similar and we set up a server to do the same job (software is open source). Cost about £30 in hosting.

Both these solutions are good for checking on the van. But they aren't professionally fitted so won't reduce your insurance. And they don't provide the continuous checks that a Thatcham approved system would provide (for considerably more money).

Ive not got the insurance hassle thankfully, just would rather not lose it

Have a look at a apple Airtag, there is probably similar for Android. Hide it away in the van chances are someone will go past using an iPhone so it updates its location, take the little speaker out of it which is easy lots of YouTube video's

Airtags are theoretically good. But their coverage relies on there being iPhones in close proximity for a reasonable period of time. Great for your keys and in cities. But not so good if your van is nicked and driven along faster roads, through the countryside and left in a barn.

Problem is that the trackers that use 2G use the old "TEXT" format for sending notifications and that is being phased out.

I think 2G data using GPRS is remaining for the foreseeable future though???

Many of the cheap trackers (including Rewire) send data back to a server, so you get continuous monitoring rather than only receiving a text when you send a request. The big advantage of this is that you get a breadcrumb trail of where the van has been, which might be useful if the van has been nicked and dumped somewhere with poor phone coverage as at least you'll have a last known position. The amount of data it sends is tiny, on 1p mobile I was always way under the minimum spend. But you do need a have some server software running to receive the data, so you either pay someone like Rewire, or you do it yourself. For my brother's tracker, I initially set up some free software on a Raspberry Pi he had running on his home network. But he wanted to use the Pi for something else, so we moved it to Google Cloud. It was about £30 per year to run the server.

I have a "Scorpion " tracker on the Concorde. They are VERY efficient in notifying you if the vehicle has moved at all. !!
We had that previously and it was good apart from the crap install but dont need anything that expensive now, if its good I'm also thinking about fitting to some other vehicles.

One of the trackers you can get for your dog is quite cheap and doesnt rely on someone with an iphone being near. Vodaphone do one, there is a monthly charge though as it has its own sim. They have a rechargeable battery but could be left permanently on charge somewhere in the mh.

Very bad news leaving a lithium ion battery permanently on charge as they have a habit of swelling up and on occasions going pop which is less than ideal in an unattended MH.

I have put a Vodafone curve tracker in my sons work can. They are currently on offer at less than £20 up front and a monthly subscription of under £3 no contract, exit any time.
Good app, easy to use. Put on semi permanent charge in his van when ignition is on. App shows history and can do real time tracking for short periods.

Many trackers are designed to run off a permanent 12v supply such as the cab/hab battery. But they have an internal battery (normally li-ion) to keep them running for a day or two if the battery is disconnected. The vast majority of li-ion chargers out there don't keep the battery on permanent charge. They will top it up pretty frequently when it naturally drains, which isn't great for its life, but the risk of it combusting is pretty tiny.

Its an idea but I'm after something that helps me to track it down if it gets stolen so ignition is Likely to be off.

It should work off its internal battery all the time. It then gets recharged with ignition on.

Just re visiting this as Montenegro trip is getting closer, I'm wondering if this will work through the heavy aluminium sides of our Mh or not?

I've just fitted an Asset Tracker AND and a standard vehicle tracker from Rewire. It gives me peace of mind to have extra layers of security, some visible and some not ..

It works from inside my sons transit van so don’t see why not

The Rewire unit I used on my previous Ducato had an external antenna. I had it mounted near the rear wheel well and the antenna was glued to the back of one of the rear lights. It's not easy to get the rear lights out of a Ducato, so I wasn't worried about it being found. When we took the ferry to Santander, I could see from the track and the multiple 'welcome to our network' messages it received that it managed to connect to several French phone networks on the way down.

Just looked at the installation and setup instructions for the GPSBob…. Hmn  Doesn’t fill me with confidence.

Yes but you wouldn't install it on top of the battery compartment as suggested !! It's how it functions as opposed to its siting as per the instructions. Our Rewire one had similar instructions re installation but if course I ignored them and installed it remotely and also linked it to give me a signal if the ignition is turned on.
Our other tracker functions differently and is unlikely to be discovered (due to the way it functions and is installed) I followed tips from another Funster on here !!
