Following the theft of our motorhome I'm busy drawing up a list of our van's contents from memory. I *think* I've remembered all the essential stuff and lots of odds and ends besides but it's possible I've completely overlooked something obvious.

It would be helpful it anyone has the time to cast an eye over my list so far just to make sure I haven't boobed.

First of all, I’m so sorry that you are going through this, horrible thing to happen.
Looking at your list you are missing bedding, sheets,duvets, pillows blankets etc.
Other detectors? , we have three, smoke, carbon monoxide and lpg.
Fire blanket
Supplies for MH system such as toilet additive, cleaners, windscreen wash.
Do you carry any extra tools, hammer, awning tie down, tie wraps, duck tape, multimeter etc
it all adds up doesn’t it?

Not a bad memory! I have a similarly detailed list complete with weights and location in motorhome for axle loading calculation. Better to be prepared than trust to memory.

Thanks for looking. No bedding in the van at the time and we only have the one detector. Toilet addative consisted of some Aldi washing tablets.

Hmmm, well I’m pretty sure that the solar panel was an after market item and it had two habitation batteries. Any idea what a single panel solar set up like this would have cost?

£250 to £350 at least

Look at price lists for optional items for your MH to get an idea, not necessarily for after market items but for factory fitted options. As I said, I'm not sure how the insurance payout is calculated. It might be on your insured value only and not on the value of a basic one of that model less depreciation.

It is great that you have prepared a long and comprehensive list. It is most definitely the way to make a successful insurance claim, putting a value to every single item you possibly can - even if only 50p. Provided the values are sensible, it is much harder for insurance companies to quibble about your individual figures which serve to fully illustrate the loss (rather than lumping things together and providing a single valuation).

Obviously, as you've probably already discovered, by the time you've added up the value of all of the single items it will come to a substantial sum.

Personally, I wouldn't use the word 'generic' in the claim. For example, just put 'Electric toaster' if you don't know the brand name. It's up to the insurer to come back and ask if they want to know, but it's doubtful they would. Obviously, as you have done, use the brand name wherever you know it, especially if it enhances the value of the item.

Just to add, very sorry to hear you find yourself in such a rotten situation, but hope you can get it resolved with a reasonable outcome and not too much hassle or delay. Good luck!

To ensure the Insurance company don’t think you have created a shopping list, take photos of what you can then you can prove you actually owned the items.
