1. The Motorhome must be permanently registered in the British Islands and have a current MOT certi cate and valid road fund licence / vehicle tax. You can get a CT (French MoT) easily enough on a UK reg vehicle, just book it and pay. But not valid when you return home to Blighty.

But that is not what the OP is about is it? It is about being away with a UK registered vehicle without a valid MOT. There is no suggestion that the OP wishes to re-register the vehicle anywhere else, let alone France. A CT will not make a UK Registered vehicle without an MOT legal in any country in Europe, including France. That is because that UK Registered vehicle has to be legal to drive in the country that it is registered in.

NO. Absolutely not.

The only place you can get a British MOT test done on a British registered vehicle is at a DOT registered MOT Station, and they are in Britain.

Any other sort of test/certifcation in other countries is only relevant for vehicles registered in those countries, and in most cases tests different things, to different standards.
Road Traffic laws are under EU agreement left to individual Member States to regulate.

Spanish registered vehicles undergo the roadworthiness test called ITV here in Spain. But it would mean utterly nothing on any non-Spanish vehicle (unless as part of the process of importation onto Spanish plates). It is only a legal requirement and only applicable to Spanish matriculated vehicles. Same as the Controle Tecnique in France. It does not test the same list of items, and not to the same technical standards as the British MOT test.

To drive your British registered vehicle on any roads anywhere in Europe it MUST at all times be maintained as legal as per the laws of its "home" country.....a British vehicle must have any required current MOT and VED (and at least third party insurance) at all times to be used on any public road.

Driving without MOT is a criminal offence, as well as the unthinkable possible implications for insurance if you were involved in an accident.

Worth mentioning that the Police in other European countries including Spain now have instant roadside online access via their laptops/phones to the British vehicles MOT and VED records database.
If caught here by Spanish Police you'd nowadays be liable to the vehicle being seized.....you'd have to low-loader it back to Britain once you'd paid the fines and, Police tow truck, and storage costs in the vehicle pound.

Sorry, but you really MUST always make sure your travel arrangements are such that your MOT doesn't run out whilst the vehicle is abroad.

I have never ever been asked about an Mot anywhere in Europe or outside Europe thats a myth. As long as your insured and got border insurance and your V5 you are OK.

In Ro you can mot any vehicle from EU and will be valid in Ro. A mate of mine is got a french plated van for good few years. I asked how you mot it? It says normal as any other Ro plates. Quite few run BG plates for cheaper insurance and tax paid in BG via agent. All legit.

Also worthy of note if a vehicle is refused an MOT that is deemed Dangerous, it's an offence to drive it from the test station.

However it is not an offence to have it taken away on a trailer for repair elsewhere.

A Spanish policeman asked us if the UK has an I in the registration, we said No it's the figure one, obviously got his teeth into something.
