More parking restrictions coming

The writer does seem a bit confused about the difference between motorhomes and caravans.

yes, he does refer to both... but

as far as at the law is concerned, there is no difference..

CURRENT LEGAL DEFINITION OF A CARAVAN

Section 29 (1) of the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960 (“The 1960 Act”) a caravan is defined as

“... any structure designed or adapted for human habitation which is capable of being moved from one place to another (whether by being towed, or by being transported on a motor vehicle or trailer) and any motor vehicle so designed or adapted but does not include:

  1. a) Any railway rolling stock which is for the time being on rails forming part of a railway system, or

  2. b) Any tent.”

Don't blame him.

It's the usual story isn't it, the few (probably the same ones who have caused problems in other places) that think they have a divine right to take the piss ruin it for the rest of us.

I don't think, in this case, it's a few long term FLT'S spoiling it but more the fact motorhomes are just there in abundance.
If they were there just one night and left next day another one would take its place so to the locals it makes no difference how long, or not, they are there .

It doesn’t matter how long they stay if they’re leaving litter, dumping waste inappropriately or doing any of the other things suggested in the story.

And its a BIG if.
All those motorhomes and if one or two dump their rubbish on the grass NONE of the others are going to have a word or at least pick it up and attempt to shame them.
Most of them will know the consequences and do everything to prevent it.
in my mind the usual litter and dumping cassettes down drains etc is sensational journalism and heresay picked up from other media.

How many children do motorhomes bring with them?

This is rubbish from a children's (birthday) party and appears to have been well attended.... Not something motorhomes are in the habit of doing in my book.
The rubbish has been taken to the bin but perhaps the bin was full, maybe the council can't afford regular rubbish collections... Who knows.... But the rubbish was taken to the bin regardless.
In my mind this is the work of wind and seagulls, not irresponsible motorhomers.

There are far too many reports of it happening to dismiss it as sensationalism.

I’m sure it does happen and I have no problem believing it’s happening in this case.

Would people “have a word” or would people be too wary of the reaction if they did so?

I agree with John.. it's more likely to be people staying just one night and others filling the parking spaces the next day.. so to the casual onlooker it looks like vans are staying longer... the waste has probably little to do with the van owners.. you see it everywhere during summer, when bins get full, rather than take it home, it's dumped next to them.

However, if you live there it doesn't matter if it's one van parked for 24 hrs, or a different van every day.. as far as the house owner is concerned, the problem is the same.. You pay for a nice house with a view, and yes, I know you don't own the view, but it's only human nature to be pissed off when it's spoiled by motorhomes parking all summer.. I wouldn't want it in my street .. nor do I suspect most of the van owners would, so why impose it on others ?

Cassette dumping in storm drains.. without a picture it's just heresy to embellish the story to stir up more angst .. not saying it's never done.. I've seen it elsewhere

See my post above yours
That's a picture from the link in this post.
The accompanying text insinuates this was left by motorhomers..... What do you think, I think sensationalism by media
The other pictures but one in the link don't show any motorhomes on the road so it's not 'all the time' as made out

Well let's face it one area just needs to read about another area claiming waste dumping and think ah that works we will say it happens here too :)

I think it's highly likely to be sensationalism because it's been proven to work in the past

I have never read such nonsense in my entire life. The picture of the rubbish is laughable and who the hell 'leaves gas bottles unattended'?

There seems to be a hard core of dedicated camping site users within this very community who relish A) calling fellow motorhome drivers FLT's (which I for one fine very offensive) and B) take every opportunity to criticise and exaggerate the 'problems' of motorhome users who choose not to park in sites.

As I write, we are parked in a deserted layby on a D road in the Somme in northern France. There is no traffic passing and we will leave without a trace. We have been travelling for almost 2 solid months now through 11 different countries and have used a site once. It was enough for me and I while I love the camping car I would rather sell it than ever venture onto a site again.

The writer of the original complaint looks to need a hobby and probably complains with equal passion about dog mess (while throwing his disgusting cigarette ends onto the ground) and the closure of the local library (even through he has never visited it). Some people need things to be unhappy about and a focus to campaign about. While fellow motorhome drivers support such ridiculous claims we are all in trouble.

While they can legally park there it will always happen.

Living near a seafront we do have Motorhomes and caravans parked along the narrow road.overlooking the sea blocking the seafront for parking by visitors to the town. These are also usually old beaten up vehicles. These are being “lived” in by workers who stay for weeks on end. They move very occasionally into the residential roads before moving back to the seafront. One suspects this is to avoid paying for accommodation and my sympathies lie with the gentleman in Walmer.

I agree that the strewn rubbish is down to seagulls.

ha ha..

predictive text.. hearsay not heresy

well I suppose it could be both :D2

I’m sure Grenville and his minions would say parking overnight at the side of the road instead of in one of their stalags is heresy :D2

so very true Nick .. this stalag is the absolutely pits..

No less than eight fishing lakes to choose from, shower and toilet facilities, a well stocked tackle shop, the “Kingfisher Cafe” which serves hot meals, snacks and a variety of hot and cold drinks, and the “Kingfisher Bar” .

£16.00 per night, includes two people and electric hook-up.. some hard standings.

what a rip-off

no self respecting FLT would be seen there, so not posting the link ;)

Bad example for me Jim.

I can’t think of anything more mind numbingly pointless than fishing so although I’m sure it’s a very pretty place that site holds even less appeal for me than a bog standard campsite (y)

I suppose my dogs would enjoy the choice of lakes to swim in :D2

oh well sorry..

was going to suggest a few more excellent stalags, some with barbed wire and guard towers with search lights.. (y)

then thought , hmm.. Nick's sat nav is probably stuffed full of council car park and pub POIs, no point...

you could always join CMC and get the full list of excellent stalags

Nah, pub car parks sound much more appealing thanks (y)

We live in Sandwich which was also mentioned in the article and while there are sometimes MHs parked on the Quay car park I can't say I've ever seen any mess or gas bottles.

That road in Walmer is sometimes lined with many MHs, especially in the summer but again I can't say I've ever noticed and mess or gas bottles.

As for Marine Parade, Dover we have seen some really ropey looking things parked there, some you wouldn't call a MH more a transit van with a mattress in it so it does make you wonder about toilet facilities. We once saw a Frankia parked up for 2 days with it's auto levellers down and parked across 4 parking bays so I can imagine people getting peeved about it. The parking signs on Marine Parade do state car & motorbike only.

You appear to have done throughout France what any right-minded and responsible FLT would do: parked where you're unlikely to cause even minor offence and left nothing behind when you left. I really don't understand why motorhomers overnight close to residential properties. There are plenty of places to park, particularly along our shoreline, where you'll see no-one - never mind find a dwelling. If we continue to offend (whether or not we believe anyone should take offence) we will lose daytime parking as well. As for who leaves gas bottles unattended: travellers do. They dump gas bottles bought locally knowing that there'll be nowhere to exchange them at their next overnight stop. By travellers I mean non-Romany itinerants.

Me neither although it looks lovely. I Googled your description & if I'm correct a nearby CS is Narrow Bridge Cottage. That too is a pleasant little site with canal walks, canal side pubs, and a mildly eccentric owner. Been there on a number of occasions.
