Personally I think they have a responsability to check their vehicle otherwise as commented below the article, anyone could say the same.

I ensure we stay at least an hour away from the ports the night before and check around the vehicle
 
It would be interesting to know where the stowaway boarded the moho.
 
Was told at handover when we first bought motorhome to remove bike cover before approaching port/tunnel and only put back on in waiting lane before boarding.
Sound advice that we have followed ever since.
 
There was a thread about this last week. Typical the driver blames everyone else for not checkin, why he didn’t check once he finished shopping before driving to the ferry beats me and why stop near the Port. It’s asking for trouble.
 
If there was an additional 50kg balancing off the back I think would have noticed it.

I had one climb under scooter cover on back about a year ago at City E , even had one open front door and hide in stepwell dont know how he thought that was going to work as it was only way in and out of RV . both left rapidly under advisement :)
