My Ford Mk7 based Hymer won't start, we were going out this weekend, but not now.
The dash lights come on for all of a few seconds, the dial needles flicker then everything is dead. If I turn key to start then I get some clicking from under seat and dash and also a strange mechanical type noise from behind the dash.

I've charged the battery but it makes no difference.

Any ideas ?

First instinct is the battery. Can you use jump leads from a good one?
When did you last use it and was it fine then?
Has anything been done since the last time used? I always try to look back at the most recent changes/incidents as they are very often the cause.

How old is the battery? It definitely sounds that you are losing some volts somewhere.

I suspect the noises from the dash are relays clicking in and out but you are not getting enough current to turn the starter motor.

As you indicate that you have charged the battery (and presumably then checked the battery voltage?), it would appear to be a issue with a connection.
Looking on the bright side, the Transit Mk.7 is usually extremely easy to steal; until sorted, this issue will make it very difficult for thieves!

My money is on the battery or the terminals with a poor connection.

Just because the battery has been charged doesn't always means it in good condition.
