Advert just come on the television, the all new range of Mercedes E vans, keep your business clean, keep your business going.

Wonder when the PVC manufacturers will start converting them.

Anybody seen or driven one? The advert never mentioned range etc.

I wish they would stop messing around producing vans based on ICE chassis. They are never going to reach their full potential.
I am more excited about what Arrival are doing. This is a UK based company producing a vehicle designed from the ground up to be an EV and their primary target is a van that costs the same as an ICE van to buy.

I think they look a hell of a lot better and look more suitable for conversion to a motorhome than the Sprinter base van is.

I really dont like the look or the shape though compared with an ICE panel van. They dont look very aerodynamic.

The world is changing! Now, what happened to electric milk floats??
One drove over my foot when i was 14. Wish i could say that i never heard it coming but I jumped out of it to make a delivery. Ours frequently went flat before we finished the round...always late for school.

I would expect it to be slightly better aerodynamically than any A class or C class with overcab bed and slightly worse than a standard PVC.

The difference isn't likely to be that great due to them having a similar frontal area. Although I am not willing to put the time in on the maths to prove it :p

What surprised me most is that rough surfaces or surfaces that change direction have a more negative effect than a smooth surface. So a modern ICE van with radiator grills, stepped in headlights ridges for windscreen scuttle etc may actually have a worse Cd than this van which has a fairly smooth front.

As for looks. No vehicle will be for everyone. Personally I don't particularly care what the outside looks like. I am a more practically orientated person and I love the inside of the Arrival van including the drivers area and rear area.

I just went looking to see if they have published their Cd value for the van. They haven't but having received a 10,000 unit order they have altered the design to make it more aerodynamic.

This may be more to your liking?

Yes that one looks much better, do you know if all the parts will be bespoke, ie, will windscreen cost £4000 ish ?, bodywork parts? (Thermoplastic composites?) mirrors etc all bespoke and hugely expensive, specialist bodywork repair only if damaged?

Or too early to say, does look promising though and exciting.

When will they be widely available I wonder and I wonder if motorhome manufacturers will start using them in the next few years?

Interesting read about impact of lithium battery....

There will be an optimal point where battery technology, charging location density, cost of production and importantly for us, weight limit classifications all align. Until then, I don’t see them as viable for our leisure vehicles.

Why make the A pillar so thick? Good designers should get all the necessary structural strength using the B pillar allowing a slim A pillar for better and safer visibility for the driver.

Note the cameras instead of mirrors. Not yet convinced this is an improvement (raindrops distort the image) albeit that can provide better aerodynamics.

A pillar seems normal size to me.

Cameras are good for visibility and aerodynamic. raindrop issue doesn't strike me as an issue.

"Normal" does not equate to best design practice. If you do it right the forward angle of view can increase from about 69 to 90 degrees, a big difference. You complained about EV vans being based on ICE platforms. Well, here is an example of follow-the-herd body design based on ICE van bodies. Could do a lot better.

As for the camera issue I expect they will eventually realise there needs to be a solution to raindrops (and dirt) affecting the quite small lens. Trouble is - that adds cost. Some new trucks have such cameras instead of mirrors so I wonder what solutions they have incorporated. Or not.

It is a structural component. Making it thinner will compromise integrity in the case of a crash. Do you think they design them with these posts for fun? If they could make them smaller I am sure they would have done by now even if just to save money.

Not likely.

Why not? Mercedes, VW, Ford and Renault have all made a hydrogen option on their vans. Not a new weird lookin version as the electrical ones always are

The manufacturer can make the A pillar much thinner while achieving a 5 star NCAP safety rating*. You just haven't researched this, for once. Tsk tsk.

You only have to make the B pillar do more of the structural support. Straightforward engineering.

[*Just like my car in fact. Honda does this. Yes, really.]

Don't need to research this, not important. On a minor detail like this I don't really care for one and suspect the manufacturers considered this in the design process.

Around our village the other day. Driver said it was good and had a range of about 100 miles, which was apparently fine for his needs.

Not sure that will cut it for a MH... ?
