Half saw an advert on tv this morning. Referring to Mercedes vans and cars something about Euro 6 appears that you can claim a refund due to emissions. Sorry no more information. Might be worth a search if you own that brand.

Yes, all the ambulance chasing lawyers are crawling all over it. It will take years to get anywhere near a court though....if ever.

What does this mean? I've googled and am non the wiser. We're awaiting a new Mercedes Sprinter campervan (due mid Aug).

It was found certain manufacturers have circumvented the Euro 6 pollution rules.
The EU has therefore come up with the Euro 6D rules.
Which are the same rules as before but without the loop holes.

Mercedes may be one of the companies that has fallen foul of the corrected laws, weather the issue can be resolved by simple re-mapping, or weather we will all need entirely new engines remains to be resolved.

It also remains to be seen if the UK follows EU pollution law.
(or as Gove has said, the UK will exceed EU pollution laws, not that I believe him for a single second)

As this issue has been bubbling under for at least 2 years, you would hope that any Mercedes built after about 2017 would comply to the Euro 6D rules.

New models after September 2017 or existing models from November 2019 asfaik. A step too far Imho, the adblue and the excessive heat is not going to help longevity

Thanks but still a bit confusing, for me. What are the implications of buying a brand new Mercedes Sprinter? Please speak to me in basic language. Mr K is working hard ( to fund our purchase) and I'm not very tech minded.

Probably just as well we are no longer constrained by the aforesaid rules then?. Not that is should concern me, as mine is a 2008 Build.

According to Gove the new UK rules will exceed EU rules.
But I presume that will be just another lie, so feel free to convert your vehicle to run off coal !

The issue with 2008 Diesels (or any diesel before 2014), is that the area you can drive in will get smaller and smaller. Eventually you will be denied access to any town.

It's already happening in selected towns in Germany and France and London.
Other cities will follow, and then larger towns will follow them.

Eventually it might, but at least our older motors won't be in bloody limp mode because they've run out of cow pee

I think you may be referring to the advert by pgmbm.com/mercedes, or I thank that is the correct web site

And there are those that think this IS still a "good Idea". Like the Chinese Virus? I assume?. Culling the competition?.

Re-posted, would really appreciate some information on this. YOu all seem to know what you are talking about, but it is a riddle to me. Thank you very much.

the basic assertion is that Mercedes and VW built in cheats to allow cars to pass emissions tests without being as 'clean' as they should have been. If you bought one of these vehicles you were missold and entitled to compensation.

here is a random example - not a recommendation

Thank you for that JonGood. So morals aside (and I don't think any car manufacturers are likely to have them) then a 2020 Sprinter should be "legal" re this issue?

Or they've found a different way round it?

Btw if you want to tag someone you should put @ before the name Beatrix Kiddo

2020 Sprinters are Euro 6c for the 3XX models (3.5T) and Euro VI for 4XX and 5XX models (4T and 5T). Whether they tricked the tests or not is basically irrelevant for the customer who cannot be fined for that.

IMV. the whole thing is just an excuse for more ambulance chasing "lawyers" to cream more cash out of the public and the public purse?. The whole Global warming/Co2. "thing" is not the problem, by the time it is "person-kind" (one cannot be gender specific, it offends the P-C brigade and snowflakes) will likely have committed "harra kirri". With some newly mutated "Virus", from a Lab in China?. But Hey what do I know?. "cynicism rules, OK!".

Hope fully when the latest "bloods" come back SWMBO`s Immune system will be "up" and she will be able to go out and about, to allow us to make more use of the `van, and two fingers to how much or little my "contribution" to emissions we make. Life is too short and getting shorter!.

I can afford to buy a new 'nice' Motorhome but I'm definitely going older next time. I've tried a lot of the new stuff on hire cars and trucks and really don't want:-

Stop Start - hate it
Ad blue - future reliability issues
Euro 6 upwards - Run too hot
Crash avoidance braking - jams the brakes on at crazy times
lane departure - annoying
Adaptive cruise control - hooks onto the slowest vehicle out there and steadily gets slower

What I'm saying is that I want to drive my Motorhome, I want to decide what it turns off and on and when and when it changes gear etc. I will take my chances with EZ's avoiding them if at all possible and the fines are probably going to be less than the depreciation anyway.

  • Our new Sprinter does not have start/stop, thanks God!
  • Ad Blue: don't know about reliability issues. Trucks do millions of miles with it. EGR systems have proven reliability issues and you'd have to buy an ancient model to avoid having an EGR system.
  • Euro 6 upwards running too hot: compared to what? And what is too hot? The water, the oil, the combustion?
  • Crash avoidance braking: had it brake for no reason a few times on my Audi. It got fixed. No such problems on the Sprinter.
  • Lane departure: I agree it is annoying. Can be disabled though.
  • Adaptive cruise control: I just discovered it on the Sprinter. That's a God send as far as I am concerned! Works amazingly well and makes driving on busy roads so more relaxing.

Trucks have lots of problems with adblue, particularly regarding corrosion to the internal elements Volvo's are notorious for it ( in all other ways a decent quality truck)

The engines run very hot with E6 so in theory they atomise the soot particles. But they are having to fit extra cooling to them particularly things like mixers and tankers that can be running while stationary. (think traffic jams)

Try ACC for a few days and then comment?

I have a Sprinter registered in September 2018
We bought it in December 2019

As it a Hymer 60th Anniversary edition which was in 2017, means I suspect my base vehicle was actually delivered to Hymer in 2017 or maybe early 2018.

I do not have the lane departure feature, it was an optional extra.
I don't think I have the crash avoidance feature, but I'm not prepared to experiment to find out!
The ACC feature sound great - how do I find out if I've got it ?

I have a cruse control stick that by process of elimination I have found will do either cruse control (which may be a great feature in the USA with wide open roads, but on typical European busy roads is dangerous ) or it will fix a top speed which is a great feature for typical European roads.

However if ACC exists, I've not found it yet
