Lots but slow learner.
Over the time i've been on here i notice some people are proud of getting a meal deal, 3 courses, bottle of wine, bread basket etc for circa €9.
Then they get upset because the place has shut down...........................wonder why.
I know we don't have control of what establishments charge and i am also one for a deal but i do wonder and fear for these sometimes almost free meals.
Just a thought.

If they're uneconomic then they won't be around for long.
Three course meal with wine is not a deal I've seen recently ?
Are you referring to Spain etc ?

Also have to wonder what's in it.

Mainly yes. Some incredibly low prices. And that's my point, everytime we go, mainly Spain the places where we enjoyed a Del Dia have shut down, unviable. But we are happy because we "got a deal". And this was before the 19.

Charging €8/9/10 for a slap up i am not the least bit surprised.

No matter what business you are in these days you will never get away with being the cheapest for long
Too many people think being the cheapest is all that brings in customers which is just simply not true. But this is usually driven by fear of failure and not the desire to want to be the best in their sector.

These (not all) are the places where you wait ages...the sauce has crust on its bottle..place isn't as tidy as what it should be..these staff seem stressed ...food bang average or even rubbish.
= Those that would pay more don't go back.

This is all driven because they are too cheap so things suffer as they dont have profits to pay for the fixes for them.

I think if we did a straw pole on 2 questions ..do you want cheap or are you willing to pay that bit more...I know what most would say.
Trying to be the cheapest is the first step to ruin.
Best value and cheapest are 2 completely separate things

Personally as long as the providers of the goods and services have choice and the consumer also does, I'm happy for market forces to determine survival.Supply and demand determines price and the choice aspect should provide varying levels of quality and value depending on the varying needs and constraints of the purchaser

Personally,I’m very unlikely to go for a meal that appears too cheap, and equally unlikely to if it’s too dear.
I was looking at the menu for a top restaurant in Cambridge recently,as the owner was a judge on Professional Masterchef……………£130 per head. And I think another menu was £250 per head. Ye gods there’s only so much you can do to a lump of meat to make it tasty!!!!!

I guess people with a company credit card taking people out pay for places like that

For some people, the cost of a meal is very important. Strangely though, this is not because they can't afford more, after all, if you are on the breadline eating out is rarely an option. Instead for them it's more like a competition "look I got this and it only cost X pounds" the quality of the meal is almost irrelevant, the price is their main goal. I am not saying that this is wrong, after all, it's their meal and their choice, but these are the people that these restaurants are trying to appeal to.

customers dont set the price thats the job of management if its not viable long term something has to give

My sister used to run a pub years ago, the profit they made on food, very simple stuff sandwiches, chips etc, was very high.

They relied on it to supplement their quite low salary.

Not any company I've ever worked for! And even less so any public sector organisation I've been involved with.

I guess you would not know if you’re not the one who takes people out, I don’t do it only people I have known in the past.

I did regularly take clients out on a company credit card, but those prices would have caused apoplexy and a very difficult conversation with the M.D!

I have been taken out to places on their card as a pretend customer etc and they was not cheap places, I doubt if I was ever the only one to have enjoyed things like that I bet it goes on in loads of places

There is a difference between a ‘plat de jour’ lunchtime meal deal approach and cheap unsustainable low pricing.

The later is a poor business model! However the former can drive extra ‘covers’ with an ‘eat what is in season and we are buying cost effectively’ mentality and can and does drive occupancy in a restaurant in quieter periods. Frankly this is good business all round, happy punters, happy restaurants… win win!

Of course, and this type of promo is cheap and it invariably uses excess stocks, left overs re invented into "plat de jour" (plate of the day) so costs are minimal and can bring good margins

same as soup de jour

soup of the day , which is usually the meat/veggies/stock left over from the last run of menu, or the main bulk of it anyway.

So today we had steaks, not all sold and we have glut in the fridge, what do you wanna do chef, "Plat de jour today/tomorrow is beef bourguignon"

Salads havent sold well, 30lb of tomatos left here ???? Soup my boy, soup
But we have loads of soup...OK Pasta special with tomato Ragu

exactly the same as any manufacturing business...use everything waste nothing

Mum wanted to take me and Mrs CC out for lunch a few weeks back to the restaurant in Chichester after I said how nice it was.

The bill came to £79 for the 3 of us, that made her splutter😂😂

Not everyone is on a Rolls Royce budget 🤷‍♂️

Also the cheap meal policy hasn’t done Witherspoons any harm it would appear 😉😊
