I just want to be sure about this building society. I would normally check with the FCA but the BS website does not show a registered company number nor an FCA one.

The website looks genuine and the name has appeared in the financial press. Can anyone near Market Harborough confirm the BS exists please, as I had not heard of it before.

Tks in advance.

Been going for 150 years, mutual BS,

Yes they are genuine. They have 6 branches. You can see the main one -a nice building in the town square in Market Harborogh - on Google maps street view. I had a savings account with them one upon a time.

There are quite a few small building societies still around in the UK.

This is thier genuine site

Many of the traditional Building Societies are 'Mutuals' (Non profits) and are genuine 'Societies'

They are not money grubbing banks like Halifax, Woolwich and other former Building Societies

Hence the real Building Societies will not appear on many bank or company related websites, as they are not a bank and not a company.

Subscribers  do not see these advertisements

Just to state though - Savings are still backed by the government up to £85000 as with other banks.

Apparently there are 43 Building Societies which are all members of the Building Societies Association. (inc. Market Harborough)

Approximately 25 million members, more than 42,000 employees and 1,470 branches.

Interesting, so the only two remaining big ones left are the Leeds and Nationwide.

I am aware that BS are 'mutuals'

But they are regulated by the FCA so I would expect their FCA Registration be displayed on their website, but I could not find it to check on them.

I live in Market Harborough and can assure you it is a genuine Building Society. Although the last I heard they weren’t opening any new saving accounts.

If you let me know when you're sending over your armoured truck with your dosh in Geoff I'd be happy to ensure it gets to it's destination safely ... just might not be the one you were expecting! :mask:

Some members did try to take the Nationwide down the Bank route some years ago but failed. They changed the rules so new members can't vote on it so unless us longterm members revolt, it will stay a mutual.
