There's an abundance of automatic levelling systems out there (most costing more than I paid for my last car), but aside from the inflatable ones are there any mechanical systems that you wind?

I know it sounds like an odd request - why would I want to make work for myself? - but I'm not sure I want to rely on even more expensive electronics (cool as they are) when I'm in the middle of nowhere. I was at a posh camp recently where the levelling blocks I had were not high enough by quite a margin, and that got me wondering.

I've seen one that cradles the tyre but comments suggested it was hard to operate and required more torque than a portable drill could provide. That and it didn't lift very high, either.

But, I swear I saw one demonstrated by using a battery drill/screwdriver to raise and lower it. It looked like a cross between the legs that I see on the auto systems (in that each leg was attached to the van) and a bit like a wheel changing jack. Be blowed if I can find any evidence of it, though, so I may have been hallucinating ...

edit - and the contradiction of no electronics & electrical drill is noted :)

Are you sure it wasn't rear corner steadies they were winding down with an electric drill attachment ?

A manual system if there was one sounds like far too much faffing about each time you stop for the night.

We don't have levelers but we do have full air suspension which gets us level over 90% of the time. Nice to be able to pull up press a button and the van is level in a minute or two, don't think I could be bothered if I had to wind jack's down every night.

It could have been I suppose. I can't fully remember.
yeah there are a few using self fitted corner steadies, or the cheap type of wind down / up jacks added them selves and use drills to wind them up, mainly for steadying.

they work ok if fitted each corner and you can be bothered manually winding but arent as good or they dont have all the bells and whistles of a proper system/self levelling etc obviously.
