Hi
Am plugged into mains electricity and one of my sockets has started making an arking noise
Of course have unplugged what was in there
Obviously there is a problem, is it a simple enough job to replace that wire from that socket to the 240 v connection, or do I have to do all the sockets?
Have an elddis autostratus 1997
I remember last year my mains charger blew ( using a crappy generator that spiked ) and I replaced it, but just before it happened, that socket was arking, then didn't use it again until now
Any help much appreciated
Nik

It may be as simple that the wire connection into the back of the socket isn't secure. Until you release the socket from it's mounting you won't know if it is the wire that is damaged or something inside the socket you can't see when the socket would need replacement.

Before doing anything to look at it, ensure your mains power, and any inverter connected to those sockets is disconnected. If in doubt, get a qualified sparks.

Yes thanks guys, was going to check socket first, but was concerned that may be a melt in the wire inside cable and won't see it

That will be extremely unlikely, if it did happen all the wire would melt, short circuit and trip the breaker.
As others have said.... A loose connection at the socket.
Just retighten.

This overheated and tripped the breaker...
I estimated the cable to be maybe 30 years old and sheltered external.

Check the plug pins for heat damage, one might be blackened if the poor connection was there.

Thanks pappajohn , you think logically!
That picture looks horrible
Yes thanks Richard and Ann , that was the first thing I did after diving at the socket when I heard it  , all looks ok
I finish earlier today so will take a good look inside socket

Concur, Socket is the prime suspect, Don`t muck about, they are cheap enough just replace it.

BTW, looking at the wire colours, will give an indication of age. The colour code was changed years ago, If you have Red, Black, Green, that is quite/very old. (cannot remember exactly when the change took place 80`s? Maybe).

1977!
(42 years ago, which means any wire in the old colours would have been made pre 1975, although possibly fitted later )

Geeze, that long!. I still have some old pieces of R-B-G 2.4 in the garage!. Must have brought them through at least 6 different properties. AND I "found" an old "fuse wired" Board recently when having a bit of a clearout, that went to the "tip" (recycling) along with about 12 various fuses, A 15 amp Round pin plug and socket and several 5amp Round pin jobby`s too. I think they where taken out of our first terraced house sometime in the 60`s. I don`t why we keep all the crap!.
