I had read about the busses and trains in the country of Luxembourg being free, but surely there had to be a catch or it was a rumour.
Suffering with snow and rain we have stopped at an aire outside a campsite with full facilities including indoor swimming pool for 16 euros a night.
We got an on time bus taking 14 minutes to ettelbruck from outside the Aire and very very clean (and empty) before seeing a ticket machine at the train station and checking with the gendarme it was free and he triple confirmed it for us.
Train is showing signs of age but seats comfortable and cycles on this one are on at the rear so going out for day and return on train (if stopping at an aire near to train station)
Station was immaculately clean.
Website or app for planning
30 minutes ettelbruck to Luxembourg and very very smooth and empty

Currently on the train and we have been following a cycle route all the way so just checked up on mapy.cz and there is a cycle route all the way. They were doing some work on platform 2 at ettelbruck and it would make sense that this is going to be part of the voie verte.
We noticed signs for an aire at ettelbruck.

Terrible! Look at the state of that train and all that litter blowing about the station!
Train? What's one of those? At the moment Transport for Wales are cancelling pretty well every service west of Carmarthen at little or no notice. West Wales is effectively cut-off from the rest of the UK in terms of public transport. 👎

That’s not good. Maybe the Welsh government have an excuse? Isn’t travel a devolved issue, like health?

Trams are free in town as well.

All this fee stuff made me look at a KFC lunch.

Uninteresting fact of the day....there is not a KFC in the country !

enough to know i shouldnt touch things i know nothing about ....
We used a free bus direct into Luxembourg city (about a 45 mins journey). Absolutely immaculate and I enjoyed being able to look at the villages, countryside etc without having to think about directions/driving etc. We are def going back later this year, it really is a very clean country and people seem to have a lot of pride in their homes and cars (not that they prob need a car in a lot of circumstances)

And we also used the tram into the city centre from the bus terminus !!

Plenty to see in the city aswell, though a bit pricey at times.

Where is the Aire please? The one we stayed on was free ehu, water, waste etc. Basically just a big car park, but ideal for a couple of nights.

The railways are run by private companies. They have been privatised for some time now and are therefore wonderful.

You need to leave your trunks behind if swimming or sauna

Dudelange was always our aire of choice if passing through with train (tube like) straight into Luxembourg
Also Remich but understand you have to pay.
Happy enough paying this time as indoor swimming pool

I'm not sure empty trains and train stations is a good thing. Maybe all the people have gone somewhere exciting :ROFLMAO:

Had our first proper stops in Luxembourg last year was well impressed.
Free transport is fine but someone is funding it from somewhere.
We have free busses up here for under 22 and over 60 and it's welll used. All good if you are on a bus route which we are.

For info of those who may use the Aire/campsite. We just went under the road into a well used charismatic bar/restaurant with numerous antiquities of a farming nature and hops hanging from the ceiling but we chose the table made out of a horse drawn sleigh.
Beer 2.60 and they give you loads of peanuts of different flavours

I had to stay incognito when travelling by train in England - As a railway worker I was ashamed of the state of the infrastructure outside London.
Hi.
I did notice weeds growing in and around some of the stations area/lines i have used. " When i wer' a lad..... ;) .........Stations and approaches were well kept,as were the trains.
