Away today in the van , after a 3 hour journey we stopped for a coffee. When we set off again I heard a few beeps ( like when the fridge beeps when the powers off) then I noticed I lost acceleration power when putting it in third . I crawled along in second until I could pull off the road. No warning lights , I turned off the engine , waited a few minutes and restarted . Its been fine since but I'm a tad worried what it could be.
The only thing I can think it could be , is that we were listening to music from Spotify through an iPhone 8 via a USB. Which may have caused a glitch which rectified when the engine was turned off then on.
Anybody else experienced this or have an idea could have happened?

Sounds like it has gone into limp mode which is basically a safety mechanism to protect the engine if there is a fault. Switching off and on the engine usually clears the fault but it may happen again. It should be possible for a mechanic to read any fault code and diagnose the problem.

Was just going to say the same, gone into limp mode. We had a golf which did it a couple of times. Pull over switch off, restart and all is fine. It may not be that but worth trying and getting it checked out. Good luck.

I used to have a Jag that would suddenly go into limp mode.

The garage could never find a fault but it kept happening.

It think it’s just technology for you:rolleyes:

IF it is a Ducato (X250). then this is what happened the first time we experienced issues. It too went into limp mode. The RAC guy diagnosed the "fault" code with the EGR valve. Cleared the fault and told me to have it investigated, but also said that it may never happen again!. It did but by that time I had my own Diagnostics so was able to do a clear when it happend subsequently. And I replaced the EGR eventually. There is an issue IMV with much of the systems, (CANBUS) They use micro currents and voltages which are measured by micro electronics, and often the real issue is as simple as Earthing.

Is it automatic or manual?
Some of our automatic wagons do it, mostly when changing down quickly, you can put your foot down on the accelerator and it goes into limp mode. We rectify it by taking our foot off then reapplying it.
Basically the selected gear is wrong for the speed we are travelling/wanting and because we’ve done it so quickly, it’s as if it’s confused. Mostly happens whilst on a blue light run which is when we don’t want it to happen.
Like others have said, a code reader by your garage should be able to advise what the fault was though.

We had a Ford transit work van that would do that, they have electronic accelerator pedals.
Would do it at random. If you put your foot under the pedal and pulled it up that sorted it with out turning off the ignition in the fast lane

Probably needs a good thrashing. Think John Cleese! And when you’ve finished beating it with a birch tree, take it out and thrash it again to teach it a lesson. These Johnny foreigner engines need to be taught a lesson.

You didn't accidentally engage the speed limiter, did you? (If you have one) - That beeps 3 or 4 times when it goes over speed (which it would if you were still accelerating at the time you hit it's set speed).

There's almost no indication of when it's engaged (my wife insists there is none!), but there is a small "off" that disappears when it is engaged.

You would have to have the switch on the stalk below the indicator set to speed limiter, rather than cruise control though.

Thank you all for your replies. All food for thought. I’ll get the manual out and attempt to look like I know what I’m doing.
I’ve emailed Fiat Brighton to see if they can look at it as we are down there next week. I await their call.
Let’s hope no more problems .
Thanks again. :-)

Good news and safe onward travels.

yes it is also have a mk2 consul needing restoration if I ever find the time

There was one (a Mk2 Consul) in our village, nice green/white 2 tone, but the guy traded it for a Mk3 Zodiac. (Z Victor 2 type) in black. His father has a 1958 Buick with tail fins etc; in Red over white. My 1971 Herald 13/60 is currently under going a deep refurb; There is also a Mk1 Consul Locally.
