Hello, I’m just back from my 1st jaunt in my new van. I had a great time in Devon, with an overnight near Glastonbury.
Most things seemed to work as they should, but when the toilet blade is closed, should this create a good seal? I bought some of that pink spray to help with flushing, and initially it would pool in the base of the loo, but fairly soon after would drain down into the cassette. I was just wondering if that’s expected?

I don’t think that the blade seal is meant to be a leak proof seal such as the one on the cassette itself. I think you’re supposed to use the expensive pink stuff to make the bowl slippery so that No2s fall easier into the hole.
We found that the pink stuff, if used in the flush water, resulted in mould growth in the flush tank and also you got the same result, and pleasant odour, using a spray bottle with very dilute fabric softener, for a fraction of the price of the Thetford pink liquid.

I wouldnt be concerned about it as eventually anything that is above the blade will end up in the cassette.

If it is too good a seal, then there is a possibility of being absolutely hammered and gong for a wee in the night, but totally forgetting to pull the blade to let it into the cassette. This would result in staining of the previously white toilet, so a friend told me who used milton to get it back to its correct colour ! :pinocchio:

Good afternoon:)
To my knowledge, it should not!
If no pink liquid underneath (outside cassette) then suspect the blade is not closed completely.
Suggest you check cassette is fixed in positively:)

If it sealed completely wouldn't the (methane ?) pressure build-up in hot weather give one a nasty surprise the next time you opened it?
ISTR a post on here not so long ago where that had happened. It took quite a lot of clearing up.

Ours easily stays sealed overnight. Make sure you slide the closer the last little bit to make the blade push up against the seal.

Each cassette (to my knowledge) has a pressure release valve.

It has a vent activated as you slide the cassette in. Vents in the cassette compartment.

Surely the blade must form a seal otherwise when you carry or wheel it to the empty point you would end up wet and smelling of urine (oops forget you old uns smell like that anyway) and if my old BOS is anything to go by if you don't open the blade all the wee drips down the side of the cassette and fills the cavity underneath and takes an awful of cleaning to get rid of the smell

Yep, the blade has a very good seal, leak proof. If blade is closed and liquid disappears, it goes down the side of cassette, and collects in the bottom cavity. The seal between the bowl and cassette, is not as tight as the cassette blade itself.

Thanks for the tip about using fabric softener.

Thank you all for your advice. There was no pink stuff (or anything else) in the cassette holding cavity 😀

Yippee a toilet thread

It should seal, if I put water in our bowl it stays there for days,
If it's not sealing give the seal a good clean & spray with silicone if that doesn't work it needs a new seal.

The seal may need replacing. Ours did when we bought our van. Has been fine since

Thank you, I‘ll have a fiddle about with it today, but it’s a new van and loo so the seal should be okay, hopefully.
Would parking on slightly uneven ground cause any loo problems?

I wouldn’t have thought so. Try replicating it at home , see if it does it again, if it doesn’t it may be it just wasn’t closed completely on one occasion causing the leak

No won't make any difference.
You say it's a new van but when was it built, Certificate of Conformity will tell you. If it was built some time ago the blade will have been left closed and if the seal had dried out opening the blade could have damaged it.
