Rollerteam 707
We have just purchased a new motorhome and I was under the impression that I’d have to upgrade my driver’s license to a C1 as I passed my test in 1998. However, I had a read on a few motorhome hire websites that a Rollerteam 707 is just under the upper weight limit. I realise this sounds incredibly naive, but is it the total weight of the motorhome when loaded that needs to be under 3500kg or the weight of the actual van before it has people and things in it? I’ve tried to Google the answer but to no avail. Many thanks for any advice given.

Hi it’s the total allowed weigh, it might say it’s under 3500kg but I’d doubt it if it’s 4 berth or above. This means you’ll probably be driving it illegal most of the time, again depending on how many people are travelling.

Hi welcome.. its the max weight of the van as per its documentation, i.e. The data plate on the bonnet slam panel. IF that is 3500 you are fine,

if you load it over 3500 then you will be driving illegally

if the max weight on the data plate is above 3500 you need a C1

Rollerteam are popular with hire companies as they are reasonably light, just weigh your van when fully loaded and tweak your load accordingly

Out of interest, I am missing C1 on my license, it should be there. A local HGV training company may be able to help you obtain the C1 but it is not a cheap route.

Look at the V5C (logbook) it is the registered revenue weight that matters in a legal argument. Anything over 3500kg needs a C1 license. The plates on the vehicle can be very misleading because there is often more than one plate. Sometimes the vehicle will have been uprated or downrated and will still have both plates visible and sometimes there will be one plate under the bonnet placed there by the vehicle manufacturer and a different one on the body placed there by the motorhome constructor.

Is it case that you passed the test before 97 or is it something that you would like to have and need a test to get it.

Check the loading limit in the boot area as well, from memory R.T. are a bit skimpy with an allowance of about 150kg. Not relevant if no boot of course. Mike.

Yes, I passed my car test back in the 80's. I used to have a trike and needed a B1 category for that. I took that test in 2013.

My licence has category A - motorcycle - which, if you know me*, is just not possible. So something is wrong somewhere.

* I have never taken a motorcycle test and due to disability I could not even sit on a motorcycle!

If you Cat A has a notation, I think it is #109 in section 12 then that is a restriction to trikes only, means you can drive a trike with no power limitations. They stuck this category on mine a couple of years ago when I moved, shortly before I got my full Category A license. It used to be covered by your B1 category but has now been seperated. If you go to the DVLA site you can download the full list of vehicles and restrictions that are covered by your license.

What do you mean?
[/what I meant was that Scotland will be issuing its own driving licences, so maybe change the categories for vehicles you are allowed to drive, hope that is clearer in what I meant 🤓

They will still have to conform to the categories agreed with the EU

If they get independence from the UK to stay in the EU ... fishy face is still trying to get it.

If the MH is second hand you need to get it weighed as it may have been changed from the original spec (eg addition of awnings, solar panels etc which will have reduced the original payload from new (not that the figures from new can be totally trusted!). You need the weight of both axles independently and add them together to get the total, that way you know exactly what payload you have left over each axle up to the maximum allowed, it's not uncommon for both max axle weights to add up to more than the overall registered vehicle weight but that doesn't mean you can go over the latter figure.

If only the DVLA website worked for me! I have written to them, and I think with Covid, I will have to be patient. Thanks for the info about the licence categories. What a pickle
