On our three week trip to Spain recently we saw hundreds of roadside signs warning of deer , we didn’t see one which raised the question , has anyone actually had a close encounter of the deer kind on their travels ?

We frequently see deer crossing the roads where we live in France, but in close to 5000Km in Norway this trip not seen one bloody Moose, did see many signs though.
Oh and unbelievably did see Northern lights :giggle:

When I lived in Kenya, there was a sign on the Nairobi to Mombasa road that stated " Elephants have right of way" :giggle:

One of our friends hit a Zebra whilst driving in the Safari Rally. He was injured, but it was terminal for the Zebra and the car. :(

Yep, in Scotland. Small deer jumped out, trees very close to the road and we had no chance, or, rather, the deer didn't. The van wasn't damaged but I'm afraid the deer was. A lady stopped to help and she said her car had been written off earlier in the year after hitting a deer. Same place.

Yep. France last September…..jumped out right in front of us, and it wasn’t a small one. Missed it by a few metres.

Yup, along with ducks, geese and a couple of wild board with lovely little babies following ...

All the time, large herds round here that need culling and putting in the freezer 🦌🍽

Brothers hit 2 now, a few months apart and they can do some serious damage. Both caught on dash camera and both just a blur as the run into the road.

Hate it when the animals are killed or injured on our roads, such a waste and it’s us encroaching into their lives. Shame that there aren’t underpasses built when we build new roads. Remember a number of them under the M1 between J10-11 and used by all the wildlife, as well as us kids. Good job really or we’d have been sprinting across the motorway in our ignorance.

Yes see them almost everyday here. Wife had around £10k damage on her Touran a few years back after hitting one that came through the windscreen and then the side windows whilst taking the children to their swimming lessons. Here you are legally required to report an incident with a wild animal immediately so they can send out a tracker to dispatch it.

Found this last year on a bike ride, i figured something was missing…..

Most likely a high speed accident with the rest of the deer some where in the ditch.

I have a photograph somewhere of that sign my late husband lived in Mombasa for a number of years he also navigated in the East African safari rally.
He came back to the uk when Idi Amin came to power In 1971

We'd see the occasional dead camel by the side of the Dubai Sharja road when I was working out there, often with a car or pickup with the cab crushed, rumor had it that if you died in the accident the police left you there and your relatives had to come and retrieve your body, not sure if that was true or just a story, this was 83/84.

Driving in Algeria I often saw the 'Sable' sign. Looked for them but found it difficult as kept hitting lots of sand drifts blown across the road. Turns out Sable is not a kind if deer but sand😃.

We have wild deer in the countryside around us in Kent and Sussex. Sometimes see them and have had to brake a few times to miss them when the leap through the hedge onto the road. They are often in a group, so if you see one crossing the road ahead slow down because there may be a few more following.

Well, I see many warning signs of steam trains all over France and not seen one steam train. Anyone?

When we lived on the edge of heathland in Surrey we nailed a “Deer Crossing“sign to a telegraph pole on the roadside. It seemed appropriate because, despite having deer fencing around our property, they always managed to get into our garden and eat my roses, etc.
As a keen gardener it was very frustrating, but as an animal lover, I enjoyed seeing the deer.
One year my sister gave me a bag of lion dung for Christmas. It’s supposed to be a deer deterrent. It wasn’t, but before the deer got to them, the roses grew better than they did with horse poo.

Yep...watch out for wild boards 😂😂...especially with surfers on them 🙈
Well spotted ... in my defence I was being attacked by 2 little hairy monsters at the time ... it's a wonder anything I typed then made sense!

Could be worse - years ago in a very rural part of Cork on a motorbike, late at night in a pub - we must have had at least 6 people warn us about the local black cows! They have a habit of wandering along the roads at night and you can't see the buggers.....

Motorbike vs cow, would be painful for both parties.

I've been surprised by how much damage just hitting a bird can do - I remember as a kid a pheasant going straight through the radiator of my Dad's Cortina. In those pre-laminated windscreen days we had a couple of times where they shattered the windscreen as well.

You wouldn't argue with an elephant.

There are quite a lot of deer in the Mon Frague area in Spain and they are big😊

Story:

Learner drivers have a lot to be nervous about when they first hit the road – but having their car crushed by a tank is unlikely to be high on their list of worries.
But an 18-year-old in Lippe, west Germany was faced with this unusual problem, after she inadvertently drove into the path of a convoy of British tanks.
Lars Risserbusch, a spokesman for Lippe police, said the teenager had not seen the fleet when she turned left in front of it.
Luckily, the 62-ton tank leading the group was able to stop in time to save her life, but not before it destroyed the front of her Toyota hatchback.
