MH
Keen to buy 1st MH
Exp
Newbie
Hi again,

Thank you for all the help i've had so far in my previous thread about spending £20k. You are all pretty much legendary when it comes to sound advice!

I'm about to head on a road trip to view a MH in a few days. I'm armed with snippets of advice/info I've picked up so far and will of course be taking the checklist from Jim's infamous buyers guide. I've acquired a damp meter and will be around that van like an airport sniffer dog.

The MH i'm going to look at is a Fiat Mizar GTL 06 plate. All the usual checks seem to be in place regarding service history, MOT, keys. It doesn't have a habitation check but I don't expect one at this age of vehicle.

I understand these vehicles have a max weight of 3500kg which may be an issue for me and the family (2 adults, 2 primary schoolers and wee dog) but I can't find much about the basic weight of these MHs. Do any owners of this type know how much I'll have to play with, roughly?

The seller also states that the central heating runs off fuel tank. Again, any info on this would be great - is it economical? Is it not something I should be considering? Pitfalls?

Any other final bits of info I should arm myself with - particularly with this style of MH?

As a family, we are desperate to get our MH so we can enjoy our amazing country but for one that is usually quite gung-ho and 'lets' get it', I'm being quite restrained and cautious with this purchase (much to the wife's annoyance). I feel greate

Don’t know the van.

but picking up on the heating. Presumably a diseal heating system.
We have one. Saves the gas, cheap, works.

issues, uses a bit of electricity when the “glow plug “ is warming up to ignite the diesel, can be noisy, and maybe smoky??. ours needs at least 1/4 tank of fuel to run . ( safety so you have some left to drive away with)

get them to switch it on and check its working inside and have an inspection outside.

somebody else will hopefully raise technical issues / problems, as ours being good for 4 years , so a youngster.!

weight.

Only way is get it weighed totally empty,( Except fuel,) then you have to add everything you put in . Family dog cloths water salt and pepper water, fuel, gas etc! Etc etc.Etc.

good luck

We had one at a Dealership.
The word 'Damp' springs to mind.
Especially all around the habitation door entrance foot well.

Hi Sopworth good luck with the viewing.

I dont know the vehicle you are going to see, but looking at a couple of ads for them quote the MAM as 3850kg with a payload of 675kg. Example Ad If this is correct then weight may not be a problem, but you will need a C1 licence to drive it.

Have you looked at the threads on here about diesel heating? I’m not sure, but think they might be called Webasto or Esbacher if my memory is working.
I think they need a lot of leccie to fire them up initially,so can be a big draw on battery power. Some say they are noisy. Make sure they show you it working.

Don’t rush to buy, there’s always lots of vans for sale. Good luck.

Is it the 7 berth? Should be on the maximum chassis which can go to 4t
At 3.5t you will minimal payload, like sending the kids ahead in a taxi

The op already stated the weight to be 3,500kg and I assume the one you saw had been uprated as many have been.
A friend used to own one and had problems siting a second battery.
Good luck!

I'm sure Ralph-n-Bev had one and loved it.

Don't know the van myself but at least you're doing all the correct things and don't be afraid to ask if they're willing to have a hab check done and any issues sorted out.

I don't know why an 06 wouldn't have a habitation check. A hab check is for damp (crucial if you want it to last and don't want expensive re=building costs), gas (crucial to be safe) at the very least. Ours is an 07 and we've always had a hab check for these things.
If they are saying because of its age not to expect a hab check I'd be doubtful about them.

All of the one I have just looked at on the internet state 3850kg, so if it is at 3500Kg it must have been down-plated.
Check the V5 when you view it to comfirm it is at 3500Kg, and if it is then that's going to take you down to 325Kg payload, ouch.

Hymer's are nice.
I had a Ci 10 Gold many years ago. I did love it at the time but it was poorly insulated. The water pipes froze in winter. The bumpers were made of thin plastic and if you looked at them they broke.
The shower tray was broke and I was quoted £350 + VAT + delivery and was told there would be an 8 week wait for it.
I bought a stronger, better quality £25 plastic tray from B&Q and 'made it fit' by trimming it down with a jig saw.
Ci stands for Caravans International.
The same model Mizar GTL at a Dealership was very damp.
I think it had travelled to Atlantis.

Take a sponge with you to dry out the damp meter.
Only joking. It may be ok.
Just the one we had wasn't a good example. Apparently these were over 40K when new.
Nice big door on the side with hydraulic rams to hold open the door.
Go over it with the finest tooth comb available.
Better safe than sorry.
Sold as seen.

You say you are on a road trip to view. if it’s the one in the previous post It’s an island and Calmac have restrictions on travel. Only essential travel or key workers are being allowed on the ferries, and they are checking. You should not be travelling in or to Scotland but that’s your choice. I would hate you to get all the way there and be refused travel especially when we are advised to go no more than 5 miles. Scotland is still in phase 1 of lockdown and travel to Island will not be allowed for a while yet.

Or is it this one Mizar on Ebay
Don't think so as that's in Purley and 3850kg, the OP said the one he's looking at is 3500kg.

The OP lives in Ayrshire so I was looking for ones up there.

Yes that's the one. I wasn't sure about putting a link to the ad on here as I felt it was a bit disrespectful to the owner should folk have harsh views on it - seems a bit cloak and dagger stuff!
If it is then Calmac only running essential travel ferry ...

I live in Ayr. I have no intention of travelling to one of the islands under the current limitations but after opening some dialogue with the owner he suggested he could take it to the mainland for me to look at as he works on the ferry (which did tie in after doing some Facebook/online stalking - sorry again if owner is on here!!).

As above, i'm not travelling to the island. The 80 mile round trip to view it is weighing on my consciences a little and we are still unsure if I should do it just yet.

Sorry I wasn’t sure, when you said road trip you could have been travelling from England and not know of the ferry situation.
