All bantering apart, not a good idea to leave the EHU coiled up like that...OK, you will be alright if just using lights and stuff, but can ruin the lead ( and your day ! ) if you start drawing a fair bit of current with heating or somesuch .......

Good job your hab door is on the other side....if it were my van I’d be needing a boat to exit. ?

We though about getting the canoe out when we camped there 2 weeks ago

I deliberately planned my little northern tour as a shakedown, I’m a little fussy and made clear to them what I expected, I must say that all issues I raised were sorted out and the van was absolutely immaculate at handover, just this one niggle to sort out with the complicated bed mechanism, rather find the issue now than lower the bed when we arrive in France next July for 6 weeks and find it then ?. It’s a cover missing on a pulley wheel that allowed a cable that raises and lowers it to come off a pulley wheel, it’s a simple thing but with the bed is unusable in the lower position as tilted and makes the 4 rear passenger seats unusable, anyway being fixed tomorrow so extra day in the camping shop buying it more presents ?.

My wife is heading home in the car later today, one of the alarm systems I had booked to get fitted tomorrow is now being done Wednesday, the other alarm is still being fitted Tuesday, it will then be set up for climate control on my driveway with dehumidifier and heating on ready for use in July next year, will give it a little run round the village now and again to get the wheels and engine moving ?

We got so sick of waiting for Lowdhams/Swift to sort out our motorhome, we sold it! I absolutely recommend Southdowns at Portsmouth. It’s a long drive but when we go for our annual check, we make it part of the holiday.

Well that just shows you how people have different experiences, I was going to buy a Burstner 744 from them, payload is vital for me, was told payload was around 450kg, not a lot but could up upgraded, I then had them weigh it and it was 220kg MORE than I had been told reducing the payload accordingly to almost unusable, apparently due to me being given the imported weight before extras such as awnings are fitted (so beware), when you ring phone is not answered, goes to answer machine, walk in and nobody around, office hidden in a corner, left to try and find what you want yourself when all you want to do is sit down with someone for 30 minutes to explain which would save time later. I even flew to Germany to the Düsseldorf show to see if there were any other vans they sold I could see there but again nobody to guide me so pretty much left to do things myself.

Got a feedback request via email, I emailed back to say I would like to give constructive feedback about points above but speaking to someone may be easier, a director emailed and said would like to listen, I called the number and no reply, went to answerphone, emailed back saying I wasn’t wasting my time, so I’m sorry but I won’t be wasting another second at that place!

Some dealers seem to think you are doing them a favour, well its my money and I don’t take that crap, luckily I have found the perfect dealership for me, it’s a long way to come compared to Southdowns which is 2 miles from my boat, but it’s better to travel a bit if you find the perfect dealership for you ?

I am not here to slag off dealers but it’s dangerous to not share experiences so others can make up their own mind, maybe it’s the salesman that is the key, I certainly have the best you could ever ask for, 97 emails answered within an hour over the last few weeks, BUT that has aided a perfect handover and expectations and immediate rectification of a minor issue with the lowering bed ?

Many manufacturers and dealers are happy to quote payload without mentioning the factory fitted extras, which often come as standard. They seem very happy to gloss over this important information.

Hymer and Carthago give the weights of all the extras in their price listS. Our Carthago dealer went through all the additional weights with us at the time of purchase and gave us revised MIRO/payload figures, this was also shown on the order confirmation which we had to sign. Also worth remembering that manufacturers are allowed a 5% tolerance on their weights.

p.s. do you get fishing rights when camped next to the lake?

I think it's like that because it's not unwound and plugged in yet :)
I felt like a knob after reading that ! But then went back and had another look at the picture
If it aint plugged in what is the orange lead that comes from the coil, back across the grass and then over to the post doing ! :-)

If you were at Lowdhams in Huddersfield I could accept your 'northern tour' description. However, I think from previous posts you are at the Nottingham branch - so 'midlands' again. Are you really not going to use the van seriously till next July? Will it just sit on your driveway till then? Have you had to pay the extra DVLA tax on it?

That isn’t my EHU, it’s the van next door ? I took the quick pic while wading through the lake in my crocs. In truth I did plug mine in after and DID leave the loose curled lead as it was, I think you are confusing a loosely coiled cable with one that is tight on a reel, I have always done it this way for the last 50yrs, still alive and nothing blown up, my boat is the same as we have very long cables to cope with different marinas, they have to be loosely coiled when on a short power socket, my boat has never blown up or have any of these others I see every weekend, so loosely laid where it doesn’t overheat I can safely say is not an issue for me.

What I did find however is that they have fitted a satellite cable that is in the power socket door but as I am in the 21st century and use Wi-Fi won’t need that, it is annoying with a short lead dangling in there I may chop it off, unless the new owner wants it when I get my PVC built as I want it in a couple of years ?. I showed the sales manager my new VB air suspension that cost a fortune, he said it doesn’t add any value to a vehicle being traded in so make sure you realise that when you fit it, seems like anything you retro fit is dead money so ensure you will make use of it, I had £12,500 of extras on my van I just sold, it helped it sell within 2 days to the first person that saw it but I didn’t get any extra money for the items, as I am now having these fitted to my new one you realise just how expensive they are to buy new and fit, mine were done over the last 9yrs so not new but if you wanted that item e.g.external BBQ point it costs real money to fit.

For an example these are the extras the buyer of my old motorhome got included, all of these have/are being fitted to my new one, except the satellite dish, roof rack, ladder and top box (as I want to stay under 3m for Peage), seems you can get a great bargain buying 2nd hand after some mug has paid to have all the extras fitted and the worry and pain that goes with it ?:
External Shower £345
External BBQ point £345
100w Solar panel £685
2 x 11kg Gaslow £795
External 240v £200
Twin lens rear view camera £745
TV bracket x 2 £150

Roof box Thule Utra Box 3 £549
Category 1 alarm £695

Total = £12,486

Plus:

The van has a great sound system throughout operated via the cab radio.

We bought it as it was the last of the 6B engines, the new ones are 6E and subject to the new VED, the other reason is that ours has been re badged as a Kontiki Sport, the only changes are the badges, a Dometic fridge that opens either left or right, don’t open both together or the door falls off! and a new grey interior that we didn’t like as it looked cold, we like the traditional wood look.

Yes the motorhome will now sit until next July, we are not motorhomers we are boaters, we have a stunning boat and spend just about every weekend on it, so no time for motorhoming ALTHOUGH we have really enjoyed our couple of days up north despite the pi**ing rain relentless every day ?. At the end of the day a boat is just like a caravan or motorhome on the water except you don’t have the annual £12k mooring fees, £6k service fees plus lift out costs and £1,800 a year to have it polished, oh and fuel costs of £500 a weekend if out and about. You can’t just leave boats lying as they deteriorate quickly and need used, I am sure there are loads of current or ex boaters on here so all common knowledge.

So enjoy your motorhome it is an absolute bargain way of travelling compared to a boat or worse still a plane! Everything is relevant, a tenter wouldmthink a caravan is posh, a caravaner may dream of a motorhome, just don’t dream of a boat unless you want to throw £50 notes constantly down a drain.

You never know, with the inspiration on the forum we may eventually sell our boat and get a proper motorhome ??. We would get one specially made for us exactly how we want it, but for that we need to do more real motorhoming and need to understand what we actually do need if that makes sense. Also it depends on where we decided to go, what we have bought is easy to get to most places, once you go for the huge trucks it would limit you but would be required if going global in it.

Not jumping the gun, need to find our way round the Swift first ?

Oh I am, absolutely FANTASTIC, I think if you treat people with respect, which works both ways, that together with communication is key, I learned. A lot on this forum and asked ten questions, payload as I said was critical, som work should I say most dealers I spoke to were useless, one told me he had no idea and wasn’t going to google them all and suggested I do it, I told him to F off I was so annoyed, that was a huge dealership in Kent. At the end of the day the trust I built in the salesman was that sold the van, at one stage I didn’t want to give Swift my money because of the sloppy finish (which has been sorted), but the salesman had worked hard for me answered EVERY question and had a young family, I wasn’t going to let him down and have him lose his commission. BUT you could have it the other way, a great brand and lousy salesman, in my opinion my situation worked well, Swift do invest in development and design, I would put them above mfi type finish, say a Ford, but with awful quality control and finish they get a bad reputation, if you get a good one you will have a great value for money van, if you get a lemon well just don’t accept a lemon, do your research and check everything before handing over your money!

At the end of the day a motorhome is a chassis with a box on the back and the box consists of a lot of other manufacturers products fitted in e.g Whale, Dometic, Thetford, Truma etc it’s how these things are connected in that matters and the quality of the box and fittings. I have one of the best heavy duty chassis on a relatively light van, every other van in the range is on a 3,500kg min is 4,250 now upgraded officially to 4,850kg giving me a payload of 1,422kg, 422 more than I need so allows me if I wanted to travel with full water tank and extra water ? a lot of other manufacturers use the exact same chassis and are maybe £50k plus more to buy, they still have the same products fitted so what are you actually paying more for, I guess the name and quality of the furniture, so for 6 weeks use a year Swift met our criteria, for long term living maybe a German one would be better but depends how you treat things. My old van was like new, I had it for 9yrs, it did 2,000 miles once a year to the SofF and back for 6 weeks, I have posted the MOT details on here to show what we did, it was kept climate controlled which I believe is the key, together with moving it now and again, I also left the handbrake off and chocked it ?

Can we see a photo of your boat?
I’m sorry but boating is separate to motorhoming, but once I meet some members always happy to have a day out with one or two of them on it as long as they are pretty and female, I don’t want my standards dropped ?

So, are you a yottie or do you have a gin palace? With a post like that I would definitely say gin palace.

Obviously you do your boating in the wrong type of boat and in the wrong country. :D

I had my sailing boat in Greece for 30 years and my costs were nothing like those.

Hardly any mooring fees when in the islands or my home port on the public quay. Lift out/in was £150 and only recently on the hard storage went up to €100pcm. If I had to motor anywhere, which I tried to avoid, it burned 2.5lt of diesel per hour.

Hardly the perception that some people have of 'like standing under a cold shower tearing up £5 notes'

Geoff

I have a motor boat, it’s very nice but I wouldn’t describe it as a gin place as we are just normal people, some people would however, depends what you are used to, we aren’t up our own arses like some, and I guess that relates to motorhomes as well, I love my shorts and crocs I don’t need to wear or travel about in brand names and logos, to me some people hide behind these as they are shallow and clueless, best way is to get naked in a sauna where everyone is equal, that’s when you find interesting people and those that actually have great life experiences ?

I’m also a qualified yacht skipper but as my wife is still working don’t have the luxury of time to enjoy a yacht, we can blast to the Channel Islands in a couple of hours, it would be an overnight trip and more in a yacht, so coming home tides don’t worry us we just blast back, with the tidal flow around Sark you could actually be going backwards in a yacht ?

Yachties enjoy the journey and when they arrive can eat in the best restaurants, we just want to get there and are there hours earlier which gives us more time to enjoy our egg sandwiches as we fill the tanks with diesel, no money left for restaurants ?

I knew it! You can spot them a mile away! We call our motorhome the land yacht, as we are ex yotties.

Did you not go for a curry the other night ? ;)
