We have a tiny L shaped kitchen which is dominated by the three burner hob and sink, almost zero workspace for preparing a meal or even making a drink!

We are not likely to use the hob much so I was thinking of trying to find something that would fit over the hob area and provide a bigger flat workspace area.

Has anyone else done this or have any ideas on a good solution?

Would love some kind of workspace extension as well but have not found anything yet.

Another possibility is a drop down shelf (support shown here).

Yes, I am considering doing this as well but this way I regain a huge amount of potentially unused workspace where the hob is!

if I need the hob, it is easy to just move the chopping board aside.

i do like the idea of the drop down shelf as I have a good place to fit it!

might then end up with a workable kitchen area! ?

I presume you have a front dinette.

If so does the hard back of the passenger seats form a screen between the kitchen and the seats.

If so you can make a “tray” that sits on top of the above to give you more area to put stuff.

I can’t find pictures unfortunately ?

That certainly sounds like my setup, if you do find any pictures that would be useful.

My main issue is not having a flat workspace to work on, I have removed the fixed table in the lounge to give more living space, so cannot use that!

it's not long since most vans had hinged covers on the hob and sink. Dual use, worktop and splashback

I would have suggested a visit to a carpenter and asking them to sculpt a chopping board into a job cover to give you the workspace without losing the hob.

What might be better is if it hinged or was in two parts, so you had the best of both.

You could mount a support for a shelf over the sink, something like we have as standard in our Carthago where a large part of the sink cover can be slotted in however I have a plastic chopping board that I use instead which means I still have the sink covered too.

You can use a similar thing for a side worktop extension if you can't fit a permanent hinged one.

Have you got a photo of your kitchen set-up? Failing that if you can give your MH's make, model and year I can try to find one on the internet to have a shuftie at, below is our kitchen set-up

This is the best I can do at short notice.

Techno (and others I believe) made a shelf that could be 'plopped' on top of the partition between the kitchen and dinette seat:

@steelaway, no I do not have the sink cover chopping board. I love your pivoting cover but I am bloody useless at DIY to try someone like that!

Minxy Girl, yup that is my layout exactly.

As you can see not much in the way of flat workspace.
My quick and dirty solution is a fancy chopping board which measures 600 x 520.

This will cover the hob and give me a large flat workspace. We take or ‘hotcup’ 1 cup electric kettle for our hot drinks, rarely use the hob.

I like the shelf idea for the seat back but need to be mindful of my drop down bed!

I've had a shuftie at your previous thread posts and believe you've got a Burstner Ixeo Time 745 - is that correct?

Is this what it looks like?

As per the secound picture.
I made a shelf that fits on the partition between the sink and the seats.

Some ply that is edged with pse and with a small up stand so things don’t fall off.

Two pieces of 2x1 pse fitted on the bottom of the ply that fits either side of the portion.

Jobs a good un ?

Tsk, tsk ... some people don't appreciate what they have ... you've got a heck of a lot more surface that we have! :giggle:

That's why I put on a photo of the lowered bed as you can see there is still a gap between it and the top of the upstand so if you do the shelf so it only goes above where the seat it and then ensure you don't leave anything on it when you lower the bed it shouldn't affect it.

Having had a shuftie at your layout though you've got the perfect place to put a lift-up flap using either the plastic supports that hinge out sideways or a couple of the metal ones (you have to have two as I found out when I fitted them in a previous camper).

You could see if you can get a chopping board to fit the sink itself, or even a circular tray.

Rather than a chopping board see if you can get a piece of laminate/melamine/acrylic as it will be lighter to move around and also not quite as thick as a wooden chopping board which will raise the worktop surface quite a bit in order to get one thick enough so it doesn't warp. I'm thinking of something like the below which you can get in various sizes and colours:

By a Murvi. Or live one Pot Noodles and microwaved gunk. :)

I wanted something that would make the majority of the work surface available as a flat surface

Many thanks, the pictures certainly help!

Just thought I would share a picture of my (delivered today) worktop cover, I think it looks good and will do the job!
