Keeping the van icon in the middle of the Google Maps screen

The Ordnance Survey publishes a master map of official height, weight and width restrictions. That is the easy bit but the vast numbers of narrow roads and lanes that have no official limits are much more difficult to identify. Google Street Scene and satellite views are far better for finding the real narrow trouble spots.

Width restrictions don't tell you how nadgery a country road is.

Exactly the point I am trying to make, the official limits are not the problem.
And it's very hard to quantify how difficult a road will be. An empty single track across a moorland with loads of marked passing spots can be a lot less stressful than a much wider country road that's winding with encroaching hedges and lots of opposing trucks. I'm not sure how any satnav attempts to quantity it.

Sygic is worth a try. It was recommended to me by a trucker family member.

I've used the Garmin Camper coupled with Google Maps on my Android phone (no AndriodAuto integration on our Moho) to great effect. Next time out I'll switch to Sygic on the phone and see how that compares with my (so far) trusty Garmin*

*having said that it did fail to find any satellites on occasion on days one and two of our venture into France, a quick hold of the power button for 10 seconds reset fixed it though.

I use Sygic Truck as a backup screen and second opinion to Google Maps. I trust Google far more often. I've found several mistakes in Sygic to do with weight and width restrictions which means I doubt it. Like a sign advising that vehicles over 3.5t go a particular route, but Sygic classing that road as having a 3.5t restriction and instead sending me down a narrow lane... I ignored it.

no sim card, I tether to my phone..
Even if I tether my iPad (wifi only model) to my iPhone, Google Maps and Apple Maps on the iPad have difficulty determining my position, especially when driving. Do you manage to use your iPad tethered to your iPhone to navigate? Maybe I’m doing something wrong.

The WiFi only model does not have a GPS chip and can not do navigation. The GPS chip comes with the SIM card model and works for navigation without having to insert a SIM card. It can get map data from a tethered iPhone but no position data. This is Apple’s devious way of making people buy more expensive iPads.

Update on our situation! We managed to resurrect our Garmin Camper sat nav when we had enough fast wifi, & all the maps could download. Although I was happy with using Google maps over the past two weeks for the most part, we had some extremely interesting routes in the alps recently, & I’m not sure my nerves have recovered yet! We managed, but the roads were sometimes narrow, & on one occasion a cart track! My husband is a very good driver, & is not fazed by this at all, & to be fair it was probably our fault, but still gave me the willies! We have a pvc, luckily, as a larger Motorhome could not have got through on one narrow road carved out of the mountain! Combined with the low bridge we just got under in a town, this was enough for me to relegate Google maps to our back up mapping. I always have it running on my phone anyway, so back to status quo! If only Google would allow size & weight, as I don’t like Magic Earth, Sygic etc etc either!

yes. no problem,

it was the primary reason I bought the Lenovo tablet.. tethered to an iPhone,

should be no problem with an iPad

Maybe it works with a non-Apple tablet but not with an iPad. I can't get navigation to work with my wifi-only iPad and Pausim seems to think you need a cellular-enabled iPad, although you don't actually need a SIM card in it.

That is correct. You need iPad that CAN take a SIM card to have gps. You don’t need the SIM in it to the gps to work.

Might be worth buying a cheap Android tablet for navigation then.
I use a SIM iPad without SIM inserted. Works well for me in all circumstances. 👍🏻

You could buy a Carpuride W701 screen or similar. This is a dashboard mounted screen which handles Apple CarPlay. You can use your iPhone navigation but on a bigger touch screen. CarPlay is great it works with Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze. I use it in all my vehicles.
Amazon product ASIN B09P6C3MND

I use an old Samsung tablet and dedicate it to moho use ... with s4s, p4n, Maps and My LPG.eu etc. Sits in the central dash cradle fine. Powered by the cab usb. I can plan routes in stages or between parkups /aires using a laptop and share the routes via email to myself on the tablet.

Open each route from the email Into Google Maps and the cunning part for me is to place the route to the Home page. (Use the three dots menu) That way i can plan both a toll free as well as a toll route and swap over if i change my mind on the go. Also i have a plan b and plan c options to stop at if i run out of time before reaching a planned stop.

Yes , I forgot you need a cellular model to have the GPS needed for navigation , my a Lenovo is not cellular but does have GPS , that was the reason I went for the cheaper Android tablet from Lenovo , it works great and was only £119

Which model is it? The current Lenovo non-LTE models do not have GPS.

Ah, cheers. Thanks for that.

I missed that one as I was looking at 10" and 11" models. I don't want one to do the navigation as such but would like GPS to make route planning, etc. Easier when using apps that need your location.

I'm a Mac fan .. iPhone, iMac, MacBook .. but couldn't justify the cost of a cellular iPad just for navigating ..

never had an Android device before, but very impressed with it .. and not just navigating, I use it a lot more than I though I would..

Nadgery is great word and very accurately descibes the problem with some routes.

Perhaps as well as having a "Find more fuel efficient routes" setting, Google Maps could add a "Find less nadgery routes" setting too! 👍

Can I just clarify something? Although the Lenovo M9 has GPS, do you still need to have the M9 tethered to a phone in order for the navigation to work?

Thanks.

I’m also a fan of Carpuride units which gives Apple car play and links to your phone and the existing Fiat radio unit. Check prices on the Carpuride website they often do good deals and can be cheaper than Amazon but with longer delivery. The only minor problem is the screen is very reflective and you will need to add an easily available non reflective film.
