just sorn or cancel direct debit as well

It depends how close to the DD date you SORN, eg if you do it today and your next DD is 1st October it will still be taken as it's too late to cancel it (can take up to 10 days), however you'll get a refund (can't remember if it's by cheque or back into your bank account. What you shouldn't do is cancel the DD as that can cause the system to go into meltdown then you have to talk to a DVLA numpty!

Usually sorn has been refunded by cheque so it can mean a trip to the bank. You will only get the complete months refunded so don't do it in the first of the new month as you will loose the rest of that month.
Does anyone remember the glorious phrase on the back of the tax disc "handing in on the 1st will not do"

Exactly how it happened for me. I did the sorn a few days before month end. The following months payment got taken but I had a refund within a few days back into my account. So don't cancel the DD.
Ref the cheque comment I think that only applies when you have paid for the whole year.

I have never SORNED at all, even during covid. I like it to be ready to go if the opportunity arises even if it's unlikely.
takes 5 mins to retax a van online if you dont think your going to use it its got to be worth the 2mins to sorn it

Yep and if not being used I like to take it for a drive every few weeks to keep everything in running order. The worse thing you can do to a van is to leave it sitting around.

Nothing to stop you driving it at the end of the month then SORNing it and not using it for a month then re-taxing it at the beginning of the next month (ie the third one) and driving it at the beginning and end, then SORNing it again ... would still fit in with your few week's of tootling.
