Im perplexed !
I’m on a campsite in France at the moment and talking to a fellow camper he tells me that he has been watching UK tv , Netflix IPlayer etc since he has arrived and not used any data at all. His set up is a MiFi unit with a EE SIM unlimited card inserted and a Kindle Firestick logging on via NordVPN on the Firestick.
I just can’t work out how this can work , surely the MiFi SIM card just uses the local mobile network to creat a WiFI hotspot and therefore the VPN installed on a Firestick can’t disguise its origin.

Any thought
Cheers

He must be using Data if streaming through his own SIM card, you do not need VPN to stream through a Firestick.

You have answered your own question. They have unlimited data / internet 👍👍😁

He won’t have unlimited data if going through his MiFI. He will be subject to a limit whilst overseas unless he has a Tiekom package maybe. The VON makes the firestixk think it is in IUK so allows iPlayer. Etc. he could get a Netflix and Prine even without a VPN

What I meant to say that his unlimited data remains intact abroad in France I.e it’s still unlimited .

He is is adamant he has used no data , I.e sim data still unlimited , since leaving the UK three weeks ago.
I’m guessing if you used a mobile phone on unlimited data as hotspot with a vpn activated then connected your firestick to the phones WiFi hotspot then that work and keep your uk unlimited data intact ? ….

Never heard of Tiekom….google here I come

So what he meant was, he is using lots of data by streaming, but he thinks the VPN arrangement is fooling the EE SIM account into thinking he is still in the UK. So his data is taken via the 'unlimited' UK allowance, therefore is not decreasing in quantity.

A VPN doesn't work like that. If I am in the UK, and use a VPN via a server in Spain for example, then all the websites I visit will think I am in Spain. But my data connection to the mobile phone mast will register a being in the UK. It won't come out of my EU roaming allowance.

I think your fellow camper is soon going to fall foul of a 'fair usage policy', unless he has a SIM with specific unlimited data in the EU.

My old Giffgaff account never used to show any roaming data but still conked out at the goody bag roaming limit of 20Gb at the time. How is he measuring data and more importantly how are EE measuring it?

He isnt.
He will be using data and can soon expect it to switch off unless he maybe got confused (or you did) and he has an EU unlimited not and EE unlimited

Never knew there was such
