Getting Better
I may be going to look at a Rimor motorhome on a 97” Mercedes 312d auto cab… it’s a Japanese import. now I understand the mains electrics are 100v 50mhz….

I probably know enough that the main charging unit will have to be changed to convert it to 240v but what about the services like the trauma heater/hot water, fridge and the likes…? I’m in the dark with electrics really. Is there such a thing as a converter that I could plug a EHU into that converts it down to 100v..?

The motorhome is fairly cheep so a bit of money could be spent to bringing it up to spec, the Mercedes side of it I assume would be same as always…?

If I got it I would be spending money on running everything on 12v anyway with solar and good batteries but I’ll need a small inverter for my trike battery charger. I don’t intend to use EHU but there may be an exception…
Does anyone have any experience on this situation…?

I’ll tag the usual suspects…

And anymore I’ve forgotten…👍🏼

A step down transformer around £30 should do it. Used in music industry to use Japanese instruments. Some on Amazon

Has it just come to the UK Garry, or already registered here, a friend for many years imported bongo's from Japan and fitted them out and sold on, he still has a camping shop and runs a glamping site. 😁

Give him a ring and mention our name and ask advice, his name is Phil. 😎 Bob.

Yes it’s registered here and has one mot for uk…. Thanks Bob 👍🏼

Just looked at various electric items for self builds to maybe redo the electrics but one thing on my mind is the trauma heater and fridge, will they be able to run on 240v..? I suppose not so would mean new heater/boiler and fridge… fridge not a problem as would probably get one to run off the solar and battery’s ..🤔

Our motorhome along with many made for the European market the heating is gas only, our last Rapido built for the UK had heating and water that would run on electric but we never used it always gas, and most of the time off grid, we have been without hook up since we left home just after Easter. 😎 Bob.

I'm sure I saw someone who had imported an American Airstream (110 v 60Hz) who just wired in a heavy duty yellow site transformer back to front, to step the voltage down from 240 to 110 ?

As said you could fit a step up transformer it will be quite a heavy lump. You will also probably want to change the mains sockets.

Or:
The charger maybe switchable to 240v should be easy to change the element on the fridge & just run the heater on gas.
All our vans have had gas only heating.

Are you thinking of a step DOWN transformer…? The van is 100v 50mhz
When ever I get a new van I only intend to run off grid with enough solar and battery power to cope so would probably change the fridge for a compressor fridge, heater will probably be a diesel heater so water heater will only be gas from a lpg tank I intend to fit…

Enquiry is just in case I need to plug in on the rare occasion..

The autos of the Merc 312D had the gearstick on the floor though.

Yes it is…

The reason I’m looking at it is that the van part is apparently rust free with 76k miles and I know it’s a good engine and box on these Mercedes vintage.. the habitation side is dated and drab but I intend to shift it about to suit my needs.

It’s originally a Rimor which is a fairly good German make…
