Going to travel through Italy, how crucial is it to have a warning sign made of Aluminium (instead of the plastic ones that are acceptable in the rest of Europe).
Thanks

Depends on how good you luck is, Italian regs say aluminium 50cm x 50cm square and the red stripes must be of a reflective material. Even if your bike rack is empty and folded up, if any part of it extends rear wards past the manufactures bodywork the the warning sign is to be displayed.

The Italian police don't like the floppy plastic ones printed on bike covers for example, but I doubt that they would blink an eye if it's rigid plastic.

We toured Italy earlier this year and nobody bothered about our plastic one - even when one of the reflectors fell off.
It is fixed permanently though to the back-box.

Same situation for us in 2016. When I went to by a replacement for our disintegrating plastic one, the Italian dealer didn't have any metal ones, but assured me that the plastic ones were acceptable in Italy. (y)

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I completely agree with The Nomad, so I bought both whilst in the UK and used Sikaflex to glue them back to back.
We have spent months in Sicily/Italy and it's nice to know that in that respect you are legal.

I have a aluminium reversible for Italy and reversed for other countries . But on one side there are three strips and on the other side five stripes and if I remember they are sloped reversed .

The stripes are supposed to point to the offside so other drivers know which side to overtake you

Stayed at Lido de Jesalo site which had a very well stocked accessory shop, everything you wanted was in there except aluminium warning boards, all they had was the plastic ones!
