Italian requirement for reflective warning board on bike rack.

This was raised many years ago and I need an update. My understanding is if the object (In my case a box) being carried on a rear mounted bile rack that includes tail, stop, indicator and number plate lights (Thule) And there is no protrusion beyond the number plate and lights, a reflective warning board is not required.
This was the consensus 10 or more years ago on here and I wandered if anybody knew as a fact what todays legal requirement is for Italy.

I seem to recall that for Italy the warning board must be metal and not the usual plastic ones that are OK in France and Spain - Not checked if this is still the case!
 
I think the spacing of the red and white lines are different too, we have a metal one with different spaced lines on each side.

Art. 164 Codice della stada par 6. (https://www.aci.it/i-servizi/normat...-164-sistemazione-del-carico-sui-veicoli.html) states that anything protruding beyond the back of the vehicle (not beyond the bike rack) needs to be signalled. Sorry the page is in Italian, google translate failed me today.
The warning board should have the red and white lines at a 45 degree angle minimum size 50cmx50cm. In another forum it was suggested to avoid the boards with the 4 amber reflective circles at each corner because they are not compliant with the road code

as a ps the Italian panel (reflex reflecting) is technically illegal in UK as any reflective material shall be treated as a light when considering light colours direction of emission (no white light to rear (exemption rev light when reversing) ) RVLR 1988
 
I'm awaiting a whole load of fines then! I have and use a panel, but not the Italian one - even in Italy :eek: ;)

Interesting note on the panels for Spain... If the load is as wide as the vehicle then 2 boards must be attached.

Most loaded cycle racks are all but! The width of the vehicle.
 
We’ve been to Italy a few times with a plastic warning board. Never been stopped and I doubt anyone ever has. Actually in a lay-by once when a load of police pulled in. Never took a blind bit of notice.

I agree but I have seen them used, bit ott in my opinion (that’s when my wife lets me have an oppinion)

Thanks for your efforts Phil. I will purchase a cheap Fiamma warning sign and stick it on the rear just to be on the safe side.
 
As with many things and situations....

If in doubt balance the cost of compliance against the cost/penalties and spoilt trip/holiday.

Just saying rather be prepared than stopped or worried about being when travelling in non uk places
 
Yes they are and apparently they should be sloping a particular way.
Yes a single one should be sloping to the centre of the road.

Yes ,correct & when used like that the offside one has to slope to the centre of the road & the nearside one slope to the kerb.

I use a board to comply with the law and also give warning to any vehicle that is behind me...a rear end nudge could be quite costly indeed for anyone failing to notice I've go a bit sticking out..
