I came across this growth in my garden today. It is about 1.5 inches across, is firm to touch and dark brown. Photos show the top and the underside where the root was.
Anyone recognise it?

Good try  but not a walnut as they only grow on trees and have a hard outer shell.

Could be, that was our first thought as it was close to a huge beech tree, but it was on the surface and I thought Truffles were underground - hence the need for a dog to sniff them out.

Fungi.............. (y)

Often called the “False Morel”, and with the scientific name, Gyromitra Esculenta, this strange looking fungus is considered a delicacy in the Great Lakes region of the USA, as well as Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. It gets its name from the cap which definitely does resemble a brain.

And, while it is edible, it can only be eaten after being cooked well. Eaten raw it can actually kill you. There are some markets that sell Brain Mushrooms, but they are required by law to stamp warning labels on the packages.

Wash your hands.... :giggle:

Good advice old-mo. I was also begining to think it is a False Morel.
I'll destroy it.

Looks like a False Morel Gyromitra esculenta also called Brain fungus and a few other English names.

IT IS EXTREMELY POISONOUS if eaten raw and some suffer even after it has been cooked.

Probably best avoided. :)

But a nice find. The real morels are probably the tastiest fungi there are. But not this one. :)

The morels are in a group known as the spore shooters as the spore forming bits are on the outside unlike other fungi where they are either on the underside of the cap or internal like puffballs.

Could be both. I did hear Doc say to Grumpy that there was a lot of movement, and that he was devastated. Seems the world fell out of his bottom .... Man'ure having a laugh ...

Steve
If thats your first answer whats your number 2 ?
That world falling out of his bottom sounds like a big job
