Sorry i tried to write on same post
i tried to light the fire and the knob came away in my hand,so i took the front off and stuck the long stick from the knob in the hole whereby it kept clicking but wouldnt ignite ,
its 30 years old so do you think its repairable and how do i replace it, it also has a fan at the back that sends hot air down pipes ,
and i cant seem to find any for sale only the fronts
cheers pampam

It looks in quite good order. I have seen a lot worse. Would not be too difficult to get it going, I would think. Is it getting gas to burner, is there a good spark If you have both it should ignite.

That looks very similar to the Carver system we have.
It always takes a while for the gas to get through as it is only the small pilot light jet that is held open during ignition.
Is it a rapid continuous spark when you hold it down or do you have to repeatedly press a button to create the spark?
The rod needs to be rotated a few degrees before pressing it down in order to get the gas through.

Try turning the rod to No 3 and then press down on the knob

Is the main gas tap for the heater turned on?

It's some years since I had one of those, but I seem to remember that it required a small battery for the ignition, maybe in that black box bottom left in the second picture. Also I think you could see the pilot flame through a small window, maybe at the bottom right in the first picture, probably have to remove/open a small cover. With the cover removed, as in the second picture, you can see the small window bottom right.

The ignitor rod may be worn down so not near enough to the gas to light it. You could try adjusting the position of it you have to do it by bending it. There is an access panel on the bottom of the heater so you need to grovel under the van.

Another to question if the spark is generated by a couple of small batteries as mine was. Mine had poor quality wiring which needed re-soldering. The heater is relatively simple but ours always worked well when fixed.

Thankyou i will get someone to have a go at mending it,the knob that turns came away in my hand thats why i took cover off but it tried to spark but wouldnt light,as im not used to the innards of gas fires i was a bit shocked at how antiquated it looked (its probably 30 years old) i shall get the caravan service guy to have a look at it thanks for all your replies
