I'm trying to tax my 1997 Hymer S650 Mercedes chassis online and after putting the reg number and 11 digit code from the V5C it says that my van it MOT exempt. Surely this can't be the case (great if it is). It doesn't have an MOT at the moment anyway as its in the garage getting this done.

I think you will find that it will become exempt a 40years old😊

It has to be 40 years old to not require an MOT.
And if stopped and it has a serious MOT failure fault you will be hammered.
Just because its exempt doesnt mean it shouldnt be tested.
Exemption is really, but not solely, aimed at vintage and classics who's owners are usually meticulous regarding maintenance but they have to put an age to the exemption.

Thanks everyone. Just wondered why it was coming up with it being exempt. Will carry on getting it MOT'd

Was the previous owner disabled and had it exempt for that reason

Look on your log book and see what it says in the tax class

It’s not old enough to be historic, and in any case you have to sign a decalration to say that it complies with the historic criteria.

My understanding is that once a vehicle reaches 40 years old it is exempt from road tax, but would still require an MOT
