Is it really worth owning a motorhome?

We went to canary islands in febuary for a week same cost of going to france for a month in august so i would say the longer away more fore your money.

Our RV is a bolt hole for a break from hospital appointments. 3 miles away and 100 yes from storage to Rallye field...... As well as long weekends when we can.

I love having the motorhome i have to admit but when i look at the monthly cost for it simply sitting there it's about £900 a month.
We do love having it but sometimes isn't used for weeks at a time, occasionally months! Mainly as we both work full time. Having recently looked at early retirement it's a no for now so ill be working until 60, however the wifes health problems have come to the fore recently and then a small stroke on top for her is making us look at priorities. Early days at the moment but she may be forced toward medical retirement and I know that getting rid of the motorhome may be on the cards depending on finances :-( If so that decisions at least 9 months away so for now we'll enjoy as much as possible with the hope and plan that we'll be able to afford it.

If hiring a motorhime in Beziers. (France) is it allowed to drive over the boarder to a neighbouring country(Spain) I only ask as when we broke down in Spain a couple of years ago we looked at repatriation via breakdown company but as we have a dog driving was the only option. This required us to exchange the vehicle at each boarder crossing. (Repaired in Spain in the end)
If this is the case I feel it would be impractical hiring as we have recently passed through 7 boarder crossings, hiring would have its limitations.

We didn't buy our motorhome until we retired. We now use it as much as possible - 30,000 miles in 3 years. I think it's worth buying it as it sits on our driveway ready to go at any time and we use it for trips to the MiL's drive, motor racing, trips around the UK and extended trips around Europe..

I don't think it would have been worth it when I was working even though I was a teacher with 13 weeks hols a year.

I would say the majority of motorhomes are under used looking at the average mileage of those for sale

If you’re off to a faraway place and only have a couple of weeks it’s probably worth hiring rather than driving. Whilst some have driven to Norway or Iceland if you fly your immediately on Holliday at the destination to enjoy two weeks or so in a MoHo.

Is owning a MoHo worth it, buy one for £100k keep it for say 6 years sell for £80k

Let’s assume you have had 30 nights away and call it 4 weeks so that’s 180 nights that would equate to £111 per night in a motor home or £1,400 for a two week break sounds like good value to me

So is a Motorhome with it oh yes 😀😎☕👍👍
Does that include fuel /ferry/servicing?

I have no idea what my old girl cost to keep/ run and don't worry about resale value as I have said before she only cost 4/5 good holidays

But it is well used in the region of 10,000 miles last year. (And im stll working) it's not always the best holiday type for my circumstances

I do feel guilty leaving it on the drive and getting on a plane but always say good by as I leave and hello when I get back

I have not gone as far as bring it back a present........yet

£900 A month that's scarey mine may be £9.00 a week

No but if you hire you would have to add that as well, I was just outlining the base cost of a vehicle and depreciation

I don’t buy the mileage thing. We are out and about all the time and do EU and UK trips but still manage to keep the mileage to 6-7k per annum. Maybe we stay put three of four days at a time.

It depends on how you use it mine was out last year e ery week without fail even a short weekend overnight would put 150miles on the click 10 weekends 1500 then over to Norfolk and some exploring twice and 2000 add onto that Devon Dorset Lincolnshire wales mid and North it soon adds up throw in Essex for a visit. I've put more milage on mine than my parent did they dud longer journeys but got to location and stayed 1000 miles down and back but no milage when they got there .they weren't full time but probably spent 7 months a year in the van.

I have to go home and work , this year far less long poodleing as job has changed and unfortunately they expect me to be there ...

Now and again. And have given me a vehicle to do it in

Giving up Mel .
Nooooo !!!! 😳 I was just showing our pooches in the MH which they love, if they were told we're selling it they'd no doubt become squatters for the new owners! 😄

For us motorhoming has never been about holidays on the cheap. It’s the freedom and memory making it has brought us. Comparing this pastime with hotels is like comparing apples to oranges.
I absolutely agree with you stevewagner, ours is our retirement gift to ourselves and we really don't care what it is costing us, we just enjoy it.

6 -7 K is reasonable. I'm talking about buying a motorhome for 100K and doing 1000 miles a year. Lots out there like this. Madness in my opinion, unless you have more money than you know what to do with.

Bought my van which was 5 years old and only had 7000 miles on it.

2 years later and it is now touching 20000 miles and am off to Germany for a month which will add another couple of thousand miles.

Buy it, use it, enjoy life 👍👍👍🥳🥳🥰

I'm the same. Mine's just a means of transport and accommodation, available 24/7 to do the (mostly spontaneous) things I want to do. Fortunately I bought it for cash 13 years ago (more or less on a 'What if ?' whim) and have no real awareness of the total running cost as they all fall at different times of the year and there's no point in adding them up as they are what they are.
However, I used to feel some pressure to use my yacht more during the short'ish (March to October max) sailing season with mooring fees in Chichester harbour rising steadily during the 17 years that I had owned it to £2800 p.a. in 2002, plus the annual additional costs of craning out and in, antifouling and other more frequent and more costly maintenance work than with a motorhome. But I enjoyed it.
