Is anyone involved in CAMpRA?

I did sign up to help them a couple of years ago after I retired, but have been away too much to be able to make any contributions. I wish them well as they’re are many of them and they work tirelessly. Shame they can’t make some real traction as all the councils operate differently and there are many who simply hate motorhomes and are not willing to consider the financial benefits visitors can bring. They have made some good successes though.

I follow campra and have donated a few times,and have stayed on a couple of aires they are doing a great job
We’ve booked a few aires through CAMpRA, I seem to think that Goathland village hall is through CAMpRA.

What's with this 'booking thing' they will never be true Aires if you have to book!

Unfortunately 97% of UK Aires are on private land and people charge from £5pn to £20pn
Although we are working hard we are fighting apathy, lack of funding, NIMBY's, and interference from Campsite owners who have no idea what touring motorhomes are about
Some you need to book, some you dont. I think the issue in the UK is that we are very used to booking and many want that security. We never used to book "over there" but we do "over here". Having said that I have been to a number of aires in Scotland where we have not booked. I think you need to assess each aire on its particular circumstances.

How do you book when you don't where you will be for the next night, that's us 95% of the time.

Yes they have put in a lot of work but they advise councils to charge far too much for just a space in a car park.

I suspect but I don't know for sure its maybe the 5 van sites with the same exemption that the clubs and this forum have you probably have to book. I've not stayed on a Campra Aire yet but we have stumbled upon a few out on the bike and they were pretty much the same as the 5 van CL Sites we generally use in the UK and I prefer to book them as there is a good chance you won't get on if you just turn up. Its frustrating in one sense as you often get an off grid CL in a massive field that if it was in France would have a hundred vans on it but I don't think its as easy to get permission to do that here.

CAMpRA advise a charge of between £5-10 a night without services but it's entirely outside their control what councils or other owners charge.

People did turn up without booking as well, but as a popular site it can get full. It took about a dozen vans. Yes Madcaravanner unfortunately I have to agree. If only local authorities understood that by allowing a large number of small motorhome overnight parking places (2 to 6 spaces) within communities thus spreading the load over their whole area we may be getting somewhere. Whilst such places are limited those that exist are ever likely to become over used. Multiple locations supported by correctly worded and 'policed' bylaws could bring the UK much nearer to the French ideal. Powys council has almost achieved this in their car parks.
Campsite owners opinions should never be considered unless they are always offering sub £10 overnight motorhome parking with basic services (fill & empty) included, sub £5 if no services. Most of us don't need or want EHU nowadays as so many have solar and lithium.
Just my thoughts as I wander France.

Why would you need power on an aire? Plenty of aires dont have any services, it helps to stop people staying too long

So he can supply water as at the moment he has to transport water to the air to a holding tank
He’s setting up a soler system to power the system
