Hi All,

We’re planning a trip to Ireland in June with our dogs. We’ll cross from Holyhead and are thinking about doing the west coast from Galway southwards.
There’s lots written about Scotland and France etc on this and other forums, but very little on Ireland. There are a few things it would be good to learn about from those on here who have some experience:-

- The ferry looks expensive (circa £400 for our 8m x 3+m van)Are there smart ways to get the cost down?
- I’ve looked on P4N and Search4Sites and there don’t seem to be many serviced sites. We’re happy to wild camp but will need a few sites to empty/fill etc. Are there better apps of sources for serviced sites in Ireland?
- Are there any other things we ought to know?

Thanks. Chris

Cant help you with sites, but southern Ireland used to have terrible roads. However a few weeks ago I got speaking to a guy from the South of Ireland while in Perthshire, who turned out to know a bloke I know around our town. Anyway got speaking about touring southern Ireland. He was telling me they both know an Irishman who owned his own quarry and started doing roads works some years ago. Long story cut short the Irishman is now the Minister for Roads (or as good as) In Ireland and one of the first things he did was to pump a load of money into renewing roads. Just so happened he got a lot of the contracts! Anyway I am told the roads are a lot better.

We have been to Ireland roads in the south are fine roads in the North are awful. At the NEC they were giving out fliers for 20% off on ferry fares, but you need to book before I think, 5th March, also money off campsites if you show the the flier. don't think we will be using it though.

There have been quite a few threads on folk seeking advice on travelling to Ireland..
A quick check on the search facility even just putting in Ireland will throw up loads..just ignore all the rugby results???

The Southern Ireland main road network, their "N" roads, are fine usually single lane each way, and often with lengths of "hard shoulder" which slower vehicles will, when practical use as temporary running lane to help others pass. The motorway network, is also OK, watch out for a couple of tolls, and most is 2 lane, rather than the standard UK 3. Smaller roads, especially if you venture out into the wilds will be less predictable, and can be narrow and windy. Apart from the really main towns there is far less traffic than you'll see in most of England.

Ferry prices are extortionate. Cheaper crossings likely to be midweek at antisocial hours. If you have a shed load of Tesco clubcard points you can treble the value against Irish Ferries, but that is charged against standard web fares, so only viable if you really do have a lot of vouchers. The NEC discount was for Irish Ferries booking made before 6th March on cruise ferries not swift, and by phone only 0818300400 quoting code ICCC. There was a separate offer allowing 22 ero per night inc EHU for 2 adults per pitch on campingireland dot ie.

What about taking the dog into Southern Ireland - pet passport required?
Strictly speaking, yes, but whether anyone will ask to see it is another question. Didn't have to show ours, but we made sure we had one.

Not required as the UK and Ireland have had a long-standing agreement on this. Likewise you technically only need a passport as a form of ID, photo driving licences are also accepted for this.

Incorrect I’m afraid. You need it for Southern Ireland. It’s also a condition of most pet insurance policies to have the Pet passport for travel abroad.
