I’m a newbie
Looking forward to our first real adventure in the motorhome off to the highlands for a few weeks. Ive Just purchased a nice second hand ipad (4th generation) to use as my sat nav. Having done some research I wanted to have the option to have real time update and notification of traffic etc and therefore bought one (unlocked) with the ability to take a SIM.
I'm thinking of getting a pay as you go SIM as I will only be using the
ipad for google maps.

Is there a way of setting your ipad to only use the data for google maps.

Cheers

Not really, why not just tether it to your phone, save buying another sim. That’s how I do it, and you need to use Waze it’s the best satnav bar none. Everyone on Waze are connected with real time reports of what’s happening on the road ahead.

If you're going off on an adventure into the highlands, you'll discover for yourself the difference between 'coverage of 98% of the population' and 'coverage of 98% of the land area'. There'll be large areas with no signal. Best to have an offline mapping satnav as a backup to online Google maps.

You can always download ‘offline’ maps on google maps Just need to remember! Could also try maps.me and download local maps as required.

The sequence goes like this: 1. Discover you're in an area with no coverage. 2 Ten minutes before, download the offline map. No problem:giggle:.

Maps.me is a backup I use. I also use it for finding my way walking around towns, finding where I parked he scooter etc. It's super-easy to add markers for any points of interest.

Thanks folks - tethering seems like a sensible option as I have lots of unused data

I’ll download maps.me that seems like a good back up not sure if I can download Scotland from google maps in one go or if I’ll have enough memory

thanks again

I have never put a sim in my iPad and not missing any screens. I tether the iPad to my iPhone Hotspot and everything works fine.

Just double checking that you did say you had bought the iPad that takes a SIM card. The standard WiFi iPad does not have the Gps chip so I bought a garmin Bluetooth gps dongle for mine.
