Hello! We are picking up our lovely MH on Thursday (a 2008 Chausson Welcome). We can hardly wait.

We have left it a wee bit late but are currently rushing around to get insurance quotes. My partner and I are both 28 but have been driving for just less than 3 years. Shield Total Insurance won't insure us as we have not held our licenses for over 3 years.

Did anyone else come up against this problem when insuring their first MH? Who did you go to?
I think, legally speaking, you must hold your license for at least two years.

We are members of the Caravan and Motorhome club so are waiting for a callback from them in the morning. I am hoping they will be the ones but I would like to have a look around the wider market before we say yes to anything.

I am really just looking to hear about your experiences and if you have any good suggestions for insurers other than the club so we can get a range of quotes?

Thank you so much in advance, you seem like a knowledgeable bunch!! :blusher:

I used Lifesure which I felt was reasonable - not sure about how long you need to have a license but it's my first time insuring a Motorhome.

Try Comfort Insurance, I went on all comparison sites, Comfort were not the cheapest but loads on here recommended them.
Cheers

AIB are a specialist broker and quite helpful.
Worth a call
They are also on here quite often

Welcome to the forum

Start with a Merekat or similar comparison site BUT watch the T&Cs cus they often arn't what you expect and exclude stuff you think should be included. Ditto return results you didn't quite ask for.

Then as others have said, Comfort, AIB (they may be you reasonable option as they are brokers not agents) Try LV & NFU, not sure how you'll get on the with CMC & CCC. if members

Have you completed any of the main club handling courses? May get a discount, If not and little or no experience of driving a longish vehicle, humbly suggest always give any turn a bit more space than your used to, watch mirrors and learn the distance/space on a corner your unit rear wheels need to clear the kerb.

Oh and Welcome to the Fun. Hope you have many enjoyable trips out and about.

Please keep us posted how you get on as many are interesed in best insurance deals... and ......

Forgot to say welcome, picked ours up less than 2 weeks ago, got loads of tips/advice from members of this forum.

Try Safeguard and make sure you get breakdown cover for Europe as part of the policy. With CCMC I believe breakdown recovery in Europe is an addition with Green Flag. Understand if you are under 3500k the AA will include the Motorhome as part of your car insurance including insurance.

Wow, thank you so much for all your help. This is really brilliant, you have calmed us down.

We haven’t done any handling courses, I thought they were a little pricey. It was cheaper to do my actual driving test!
Thanks for driving tips, I am quite scared about the first few drives.

I will let you know how we get on.

Welcome & give Adrian Flux a call

Hello,

After a fun day of calling insurers, here are the results:

The Caravan and Motorhome club were decidedly unhelpful! They couldn't really work out why they couldn't insurance but they certainly couldn't.

Shield offered us a preposterous price, £300 over the price we went with in the end and also said that that would be the lowest we could get in our circumstances - of course.

Comfort insurance would not insure us at all as we are currently living off independent means.

Caravan guard require you to have been driving for at least 3 years.

I must say, it is expensive to insure someone who is less experienced at driving, living on savings (we quit our jobs to start touring!!!), aged 28 and parking the vehicle away from home (at a secure car park with CCTV, Security Lighting, Fenced Perimeter and locked gates).

I would recommend that anyone in our situation would be best going through a broker. We decided on Adrian Flux - they were very efficient and gave us a nice little reduction over the phone. The parking situation was fine with them, as was everything else in the end.
Still awaiting a response from Lancaster insurance who are also a broker and we can cancel the Adrian Flux within 14 days if they give us a good price.

I would also advise that if you are in similar circumstances to us, expect to pay more than usual for your first year of driving. I imagine the price will come down next year.

Thanks again for all the help. We are just glad we can get on the road on Thursday.

It depends on how long the Moho is if it is over 18ft 6in they will not cover it on your car cover

Rogwaan,

My daughter was in a very similar position several weeks ago. She finally ended up with a very favourable quote from Brentacre Ins.
If you weren't already aware of this company they may be worth a try.
Good luck.

Just to add to our body of knowledge on insurance. My annual renewal is nigh.
Go compare site - £500 - £700
Confused.COM - £460 to £600
Money Supermarket / Performance Direct £320 - £1000
Some of these included breakdown cover, but not all. Some had only UK breakdown cover. Some offered just 31 days European breakdown cover.
Add £110 for 60 day Euro breakdown cover with the £320 quote from KGM insurers. I took this one.
My previous broker - Gove and Dean Insurance quoted the best price - for the 3rd year running. Their sister brokers, with the same quote, are Performance Direct.
We all have different requirements of course, my wife as a second driver would have cost £50 or a lot more extra.
The Go Compare site was useful because it explained why certain insurers would not provide quotes. One reason was my 76 years fell outside of their 25-75 range. The wife's (mild) asthma was a 'decline' for a couple of insurers.
FUN needs a 'sticky' for recent insurance quotes, because we all have to suffer it every year.
Love the site.
