Has anyone done this route, and if so what aires or platz places can you recommend to stay overnight. We are hoping to go over the Grossglockner early next week.

We are staying in biberwier at the moment, very nice place though just had thunderstorm

things have not gone to plan so some route advice and stops would be much appreciated.

Can't help with stop overs but can tell you it's £35 euro for the pass.

Check out whether you can stop overnight at frank josefs hut. If you can you need to be on the glacier road by about 1530
For zel am see we stayed out of town near eagles nest for 8 euros a night. Used motorbike frombthere.
Aire in town is now or was last year motorhome unfriendly but if you use acsi to go into campsite you get discounts on things like eagles nest so a possible saving for staying on campsite.
We followed the lakes out via fisching. Lovely road and one particularly nice lake possibly called hintersee.
Chiemsee after that at 6 euros a night

We was on the grossglockner last week, the stern Austrian toll booth lady said NO CAMPING on the aire, I don’t know if it’s going to be permanent or whether it was the time of year.

Forgot to add it’s a tenner less if you go on after 5pm I think!

I have acsi, but what is the name of campsite or the one near eagles nest too

We went, we saw, we conquered. Had a fabulous day for driving up and over. Took us from 9am to 5pm. Many bikes and posh cars. So much to see. Just watch brakes on way down, last 5 or so miles. Otherwise I can recommend it, it’s not to scary. Even saw family of marmots.

Hope you enjoy. We waited around for 5 days for it to open last month on our way to Slovenia and Croatia but gave up in the end. Ended up taking the 108 to Lienz, a nice run but nothing like the Grossglockner!

We watched the weather carefully and our sites so we could do it hopefully on the Monday. It was perfect conditions, blue sky all the way over. We did try 2 years ago and came back due to awful weather. Difficult to time it right. It’s been nice Monday but hazy skies so not best views. It’s 43 deg now and to hot to to anything. At a exc site in bieberwier, next to chairlift. Good for walking and cycling. Need electric bike though, everyone has them even the mountain cyclists. Have to keep dog cool.

Home safe and sound, had a great experience , not holiday as too hot to do a lot, but had a great time. Spent a lot on sites this holiday. Diesel 45p per litre cheaper in Luxembourg than France.

Pleased your home safe, still envious you managed the Grossglockner! I will try again next year.

Did it a couple of years ago. Stayed in Bruck at Sportcamp Woferlgut. Did it slightly differently by taking an organised coach trip. Had a guided tour, stopped at all the interesting places for the pictures etc. The advantage mainly being that you were able to take your eyes off the road and admire the scenery. No ware and tare on the brakes either.

We also stayed at that site, but did not like it, to over the top for us, we like plain and simple, park almost where you like sites. The site the other side was excellent and would go there again, Helingenblut, nice for the dog and lots of interesting walks. Site facilities excellent too. Nice people.
