hi all,the better half and myself are off to a site just outside shrewsbury next week for 7 days staying at seven house camp site.Never been in that neck of the woods before so I just wanted to ask if any funsters know the area and can recommend any places to visit ,we will be with our two westies so wherever we go must be dog friendly.Looked at the Victorian village nearby but not sure if they have anywhere to eat in side the attraction where dogs are welcome, any help you guys can give would be most welcome

One tip, SY3 5AD, Bicton Heath CoOp is about 2.5 miles. If they haven't got it there, you dont need it
Also Chinese Take Away and also a Chippy on same parade

I don’t know if it fits with your plans but we have a rally at Shrewsbury for the Vintage show weekend 6-7 July starts on the Thursday.

The Victorian town, Blists Hill has a large eatery and an old fashioned pub selling real ale and pork pies. I used to be a volunteer there :)

Some good NT places around: Attingham tingham park, sunnycroft, powys castle. Lots of gradens, hawkstone follies, cosford air museum, long mynd (shuttle bus) town itself. Ludlow, lots of walks. Food festival this weekend

I live just down the road, in fact almost next door to Sunnycroft mentioned above! Sunnycroft is a Victorian villa, like a country estate in miniature, that's almost completely unaltered - all the contents are as they were in Victorian times. Accessible on tours only. Dogs only allowed in the grounds.

So - all the Ironbridge museums, you could easily spend 2-3 days doing those. Get a passport ticket and it's not that expensive. Only Blists Hill open air museum allows dogs though. Ironbridge itself is nice to wander round, Eley's pie shop opposite the bridge does fantastic pork pies!

Unless you like modern shopping centres, don't bother with Telford. Shrewsbury though is well worth a wander round, park and ride is easiest way to get in, dogs allowed at driver's discretion - so basically quiet well behaved dogs.

Much Wenlock is a nice little place for a stroll. Ludlow is worth the drive, lots of lovely old buildings, on the way you could visit Stokesay Castle. And finally, and also on the way to Ludlow, the Land of Lost Content in Craven Arms - possibly the most eccentric museum ever, I love the place, just a big collection of everyday "stuff" from years gone by crammed into an old chapel - one to wander round and go "crikey, I had one of those!"

If you like walking, Wenlock Edge (just outside Much Wenlock) is lovely, in fact there's lots and lots of good walking in South Shropshire - Long Mynd, Stiperstones, to name but a few.

hi feltwell, many thanks for taking the time to write your great reply with all the suggestions, will perhaps pass on the ironbridge museums as only one allows the dogs in,but the rest are on the list ,cheers, brian plymouth

Bridgnorth is a lovely little town with lots of dog-friendly pubs and cafes, a funicular railway and a castle (sort of!)

Hi Brian, Blists Hill museum at Ironbridge is very large - it's an open air museum - you could spend best part of a day wandering round it if it took your fancy. Rather like Beamish, if you've ever been there.

Janine's spot on as well, Bridgnorth is very nice. Oh yes, and there's the Severn Valley Railway if you like steam. Quite a few English Heritage sites in the area as well, often smaller ones, generally dog friendly.

Shropshire is a funny old place - bit of a hidden gem I think, people pass it by - and I'm not even a native!

We happened to wander through that area last week, purely by chance as we were just poodling about after Stratford. Never explored before and visited a few of the places mentioned; quite delighted and will most likely return. We're members of both NT and English Heritage and visited a few of their places in the area. Also did a couple of pub-stops for overnighting (used Britstops book).

Has anyone mentioned Bishops Castle? Very quirky little place with a fascinating, locally-run museum in the House on Crutches, lots of walking, and the Three Tuns local brewery. You can park your van at the cattle market, on non-market days.
Also take a drive to nearby Clun.
You'll love Shropshire.

It used to be even more quirky when the Purple Funeral Company used to have a shop there!

Thats a thought and if you re at Bishops castle you must go to Bury Ditches a very good example of a ancient hillfort

If you like canals you can visit the spectacular https://www.pontcysyllte-aqueduct.co.uk/ we like the walk/cycle ride from the chirk side of the aqueduct into Llangollen. I believe you can still overnight at the Chirk Marina and while you re there the dual aqueduct and viaduct are worth seeing oh and there s a castle.........

Shame about the dogs at Ironbridge gorge, I really can't see why btw, but its still worth a walk around and stand on the worlds first Ironbridge.

Don't miss the British Ironwork Centre, near Oswestry. This is where the Knife Angel was made and is full of the most amazing metal artwork. Have a wonderful time in our beautiful County.
